August 25th 2015 Seneschalstown GFC Notes

Festival Of Football
This Saturday promises to be an excellent day in Fr. Tully Park as we host a Festival of Football. With events throwing in at 15:00 and running to around 18:00 the football field will be a hive of activity with a whide range of events being run.

Our teams from U-6 to Minor will be involved in a series of Blitzes on the main pitch while on the training pitch there will be a series of novelty games and races.

The award winning K&S Accordion Band will be present and they will lead our teams on a parade of the pitch while also no doubt performing a few tunes.

Following the parade there will be a World Record attempt which will involve attempting to perform the largest hand passing drill.

Some of our sides which have performed excellently on the field of play this year will be presented with their medals while the younger members of our club will be able to get their faces painted.

One of the highlights of the day will be when our plans for developing a second pitch are launched. The development committee have been working very hard and they will present their plans and announce the timeframe for development at the Festival of Football.

To keep everybody well fed there will be a barbecue operating over the course of the afternoon which will be run by the local scout group.

Senior
The year came to a close on Sunday last for our Senior footballers when they defeated Ballinlough in Round 5 of the Hoganstand.com Meath Senior Football Championship by 1-10 to 0-09. Needing a win to guarantee themselves Senior status for next year the side duly obliged with a Joe Sheridan goal direct from a line ball being the highlight of the game.

Unfortunaltely for the side they got off to a slow start in the Championship losing their first three games which left them out of contention for the knockout stages before picking up two wins from their last two games.

Between League and Championship the side won their last four matches of the season which leaves them with positive foundations to build upon for the 2016 season.

Junior B
On Saturday evening in Skryne the Junior B’s qualified for the semi-final of the Seamus Connolly Catering Junior B Football Championship for the third consecutive year when overcoming the challenge of St. Patrick’s by 1-10 to 0-09. On a day when discipline proved key the Seneschalstown side kept theirs best

Drawing 1-04 to 0-07 at half time the side put in an excellent defensive effort in the second half to restrict the Stamullen men to just two points while led by Jonathan Gilsenan up front they kept the scoreboard ticking over to eventually record a four point win.

Next up for them is a local derby and repeat of the 2014quarter final as well as a group game from this year when Slane provide the opposition in what is sure to be a tough encounter. The cumulative winning margin in both of those games was three points so there is sure to be little between the teams once more.

Junior D
The Junior D’s were another side who managed to eke out a victory over the weekend when they overcame Ratoath by 2-07 to 1-09 in the curtain raiser to the Junior B semi-final on Saturday. This result secured them their place in the Championship Final once more and they will be looking to go one better than in 2013 when Kilmainhamwood came out on top.

This year Curraha will provide the opposition and they will be hotly fancied to win having secured promotion to Division 3 of the B Leagues while Seneschalstown were relegated to Division 6. However our men will fancy their chances and with a potent mixture of youth and experience amongst their ranks they will leave no stone unturned in their efforts to win.

Minor
Páirc Tailteann will be the venue this evening, Tuesday, for the Minor Football Summer League Division B Final. Throw in is at 19:15 with Summerhill providing the opposition. The South Meath side operate in Division 1 for the Championship while we operate in Division 3 but having won the opening round game between the two sides by 1-16 to 3-08 Seneschalstown won’t be short of confidence.

Best wishes to Paul, Michael and all the team this evening.

U-16
Congratulations to our U-16’s who won the Patrick Ward Tournament when overcoming St. Cuthbert’s on Sunday evening in a very wet Fr. Tully Park.

Patrick was a very promising player whose life was tragically cut short following an accident at Seneschalstown Cross when he was a teenager and it was very fitting when his nephew Naois Sweeney lifted the cup as team captain on Sunday evening.

U-14
Seneschalstown was the venue to host one of the U-14 regional 7 aside qualifiers on Saturday last, three team were involved, Seneschalstown, Bective/Cannistown and Walterstown, unfortunately Duleek / Bellewstown couldn't field a team.

The opening game involved Seneschalstown & Bective/Cannistown, seven and a half minutes a half and all scores counted as a point, this needless to say is fast and furious a lot of off the ball running and tackling from both teams, Seneschalstown settled the quicker and had five points on the board before Bective/Cannistown registered their first score but the Seneschalstown lads push on and eventually won out by 0-17 to 0-1.

Bective / Cannistown were then scheduled to play Walterstown in the next round, with Walterstown operating out of Division 1 in the U-14 Leagues coming out on top.

This left the final and decisive game between Seneschalstown & Walterstown to decide who went through to the finals next Saturday 29th from this venue.

This was a frantic encounter with both teams playing a great brand of running football with excellent scores and passing. Seneschalstown started off first with three quick points in successions before Walterstown came back with three points of their own to draw the match before two further points just before half time left Seneschalstown leading by 0-05 to 0-03 at the break.

The second half started with quick points from both teams before Walterstown hit a purple patch and registered four points in a row to leave them leading by two points with time almost up but once again the Seneschalstown lads showed great resilience and indeed composure by scoring two quick points at the death to leave the scores level at full-time on 0-08 apiece.

This meant both teams had to go into a 20 metre kick off to decide the winner, the same as a penalty shoot out, with Sean Commons, Cathal Hickey, Joseph Moore all scoring before one of the Walterstown lads missed their fourth shot. This left Simon Rooney to score which he did and Walterstown's fifth kicker scored which left it up to Ross Mullen to convert the last kick which he duly did with ease putting Seneschalstown through as regional winners.

Both teams can be very proud of themselves after giving those present an epic encounter.

Seneschalstown Team: Jamie Kirwan, Liam Maguire, Padraig Finnegan, Woodley Nicholson, Cathal Hickey, Simon Rooney, Joseph Moore, Alan Carey, Sean Commons, Ross Mullan.

Seneschalstown Nursery
Our U-8’s and U-10’s took part in the latest Go Games Blitz in Ratoath on Saturday morning with both sides putting in excellent showings as they displayed their teamwork and skills.

This weekend will be free from training as the U-6’s, U-8’s and U-10’s take part in our Festival of Football while the U-8’s will also take part in a Tournament hosted by Glen Emmets in Tullyallen on Saturday morning.

Senior Ladies
In their final group match of the Coca Cola Meath LGFA Senior Football Championship our Senior Ladies take on Boardsmill in Bective GFC at 19:00 this evening, Tuesday.
This is guaranteed to be a difficult encounter as Boardsmill and ourselves are currently tied on 11 points in the table with both qualified for the semi-finals.
As usual the ladies would appreciate a large support in Bective to cheer them on.

Meath Ladies U-12
On Sunday last Anna Wogan and Zoe Kirwan both lined out for Meath Ladies U-12 as they took on Dublin in atrocious conditions in Skryne. Despite the teeming rain the girls played their part as Meath put in an impressive showing.
