Carey outstanding as Seneschalstown secure win

Under 15 Football League Division 2 Round 5

Seneschalstown 1-14 St. Colmcilles 3-03

On a perfect Sunday morning for football the U-15 players from Seneschalstown and St. Colmcilles served up an entertaining game of football in Fr. Tully Park at the end of which the home side came out on top by five points. With both of these sides already into the semi-finals prior to the throw in what was most at stake was the potential of a home semi-final for the winners.

And despite the visitors getting off to the best possible start when they raised a green flag after only twenty five seconds it was Seneschalstown who were to be the winners as they got on top for large spells with thanks to superb performances across the field but in particular from the half backs and midfield players.

Following the great start which St. Colmcilles got off to with that very early goal the Seneschalstown response was very impressive as they rattles off four points in a row while in the midst of these Ross Mullen saw a goal attempt well saved by the ‘Cilles goalkeeper. Cathal Hickey got the first point of the match in the third minute before centre back Joseph Moore sent one over a minute later. Jason Lyons was next to score when he got on the end of a move involving Moore and Sean Commons before midfielder Daire Finnegan nudged Seneschalstown into the lead just after the save from Ross Mullen’s goal effort.

St. Colmcilles relied to this run of scores with a goal and two points to push four points ahead at the end of the opening quarter. Ross Mullen steadied the Seneschalstown ship when hitting their first score in twelve minutes after seventeen had elapsed on the clock. Dylan Keating then hit a brace, one from a free before Sean Commons drew the team’s level on twenty minutes at 0-08 to 2-02 and this was still to be the score ten minutes later when Jack Gordon blew the half time whistle.

Upon the resumption Dylan Keating edged the home side into a one point lead when he sent over a point and this soon became two when Joseph Moore fired over an outstanding effort from distance. Keating then added another, this one from a free following a foul on Daire Finnegan. Seneschalstown were next to suffer a blow when the influential Alan Mulvany was forced off the field with an injury but his replacement Padraig Finnegan was to have an instant impact as with his first touch after being reintroduced he struck the ball low and hard into the bottom corner to score what is a rare goal for a player more used to playing in the full back line.

On forty five minutes Dylan Keating extended the Seneschalstown lead when pointing from play following excellent work out the field from Jamie Kirwan who was enjoying a fine game at wing back. Two minutes later the no. 13 pointed once more and then with fifty three on the clock Joseph Moore hit his third of the game when he split the posts from long range free. St. Colmcilles were finding scores hard to come by in the second half and it wasn’t until the fifty seventh minute when the managed to register as they netted the third goal of the game which left just six points now between the sides.

Jamie Kirwan was soon to have to leave the fray with a hand injury which resulted in both sides going down to fourteen, Seneschalstown having no further substitutes and Fair Play rules applying. The East Meath side did manage to further reduce the margin in stoppage time when pointing from play but this was to be as close as they could get as ultimately they ran out of time to mount further pressure on the Seneschalstown goal.

On a day when there were good performances all over the field Seneschalstown were in particular well served by Brian Boyd, Sean Carey, Joseph Moore, Jamie Kirwan, Daire Finnegan and James Commons.
