This fifth round match in the girls under 12 championship played in ideal conditions in Seneschalstown on Friday last, was much tighter than the final scoreline suggests, it was only in the last ten minutes of the game that the Gaels pulled clear to gain a good victory over very tough opposition.

There was nothing between the two teams early on and it took a fine goal from the impressive Niamh Donnelly to give the Gaels some breathing room. This goal along with points from Donnelly. Leanne Harris and two from Aisling Duffy gave the Gaels a 1-4 0-2 half time lead.

Simonstown were guilty of making some wrong decisions when in possession and also of kicking some bad wides in a tight start to the second half. The home team took heart from these missed chances for the town team and responded with a magnificent fightback.

Points from Donnelly and Niamh Hand were matched and then bettered by the home team who got the deficit back to three points. Simonstown seemed to be spurred on by the loss of their influential midfielder Niamh Hand through injury and knew they had a battle on their hands and a magnificent individual goal by the outstanding Lauryn Grier set the tone for the last ten minutes of the game. The hard working Tara Berigan also showed great determination to score a fantastic goal for the Gaels. These scores gave them a lift and a well worked one two between the busy pair of Mollie Byrne and Aisling Duffy saw Byrne kick a smashing point. A goal and a point from Duffy and two more points from Donnelly wrapped up a hard earned win for the Gaels.

Also showing up well for them were Lynn Hannon, Sinead Mooney and Roisin Duffy who linked up well with her team mates when introduced. Simonstown showed good battling qualities all over the pitch and will be glad to have captured some more points in their quest to gain entry to the knockout stages of this competition. This game was typical of this division , where all games seem to be keenly contested and played in a very sporting manner which is a credit to all involved.
