Meath Ladies U-15 League Round 2

Seneschalstown 1-9 Summerhill 4-3

The old adage of goals wins game was evident in this second round tie between Seneschalstown and Summerhill in Fr. Tully Park. In a game with two evenly balanced teams, the visitor’s ability to hit the back of the net was the difference in the end.

Katie Fitzsimons open the scoring for the home team on two minutes with a point from play but the visitors replied on five minutes with their first goal. Neither team troubled the scoreboard over the next ten minutes as both defences were well on top. The second quarter belonged to the home team who scored 1-06 without reply with fine scores all from play. Shona Loughran open her account in the fifteenth minute with a point which was followed soon after by a point from Chrystal Delamere on sixteen minutes. The same two players added points in the twentieth and twenty second minutes respectively as the home team were now putting fine moves together and taking their scores and were also unlucky with the ball crashing off the crossbar.

The defence of Amy Barter, Chloe Williams, Aoife Darby, Leah Ryan, Leanne Clarke and Ella Waddington were doing their part in repelling Summerhill attacks and the scorers were well assisted up front by Sorcha Gough and Aoife Mulvany. In the twenty sixth minute Kelly Smith opened her account with another fine point and followed up two minutes later with a goal which the teams play deserved. Katie Geraghty then popped over another point in the twenty ninth minute for the home team but Summerhill got back into the game with a goal from a penalty on the stroke of half time despite the best efforts of keeper Shauna Gordon who got a strong hand to the kick but the ball spun inside the post to leave the HT score at 1-07 to 2-00.

Summerhill opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play which was cancelled out with a point from Aoife Lenehan again following a great team move. The next two minutes were to prove costly though as in the sixth and seventh minutes the ‘Hill found the back of the net on two occasions and added two further points heading into the final quarter.

The Furze girls pushed hard to get back into the game and again the crossbar got in the way and while they had plenty of possession, wrong options and misplaced passes were to prove costly with a point from Shona Loughran on twenty five minutes the only reward for their efforts.

While the result wasn’t what they wanted, this group can take great heart from the standard of play at times particularly in the first half. Both teams deserved credit for the standard of play on show.
