A League Division 3B Round 3

Seneschalstown 5-12 Clonard 0-09

Seneschalstown picked up where they left off in Division 3B of the League when they comfortably accounted for Clonard on Saturday evening in Fr. Tully Park. Conditions were considerably better than for the Senior game 24 hours earlier, so Seneschalstown eventually took full advantage and put the game to bed.

One man in particular would go on to have a productive hour, Éamon Finneagn who would eventually finish with 3-05 to his name opened the scoring with a point in the third minute. Clonard would reply with two points in the fourth and seventh minutes and move in front for the only time over the course of the hour. Finnegan equalised from a free, and Danny Waters excellently popped over an excellent point from a tight angle towards the end line.

One minute later, Seneschalstown’s first goal of the evening arrived.

After Jack Owens was bundled over in the large square, Finnegan stepped up and duly dispatched the penalty with aplomb for his first goal of the evening. Darren O’Brien followed this up with a fine point from play, along with another Finnegan free.

The Fox brothers, Mark and David were next to trouble the scoreboard. Team captain for the evening Mark was first to register via the post while David did likewise from the next attack. Clonard got forward for another two points with Finnegan kicking the last score of the half to leave Seneschalstown seven up the break, 1-08 to 0-04.

Looking to kick on right at the start of the second half, Seneschalstown started in the best possible fashion. After winning the throw-in, Darren O’Brien and Ronan Conneely combined for for Conneely to charge through the middle a produce a tidy finish to the net. Finnegan tagged on another free before the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the second half notching up three points on the trot.

With 15 minutes to play Seneschalstown struck for goal number two. Having lined out in the unusual position of netminder in the first half, Robbie Finnegan moved out the field for the second half. On this occasion he got the ball in the middle third and took off for goal. When he got to the 21 he checked back inside and unleashed an unstoppable rocket into the top left corner off his supposed weaker foot.

Five minutes later, Finnegan raised green flag number four of the game and now Seneschalstown were well on their way to victory. Another substitute, Séimí Byrne who also played 60 minutes for the Seniors on Friday added two quickfire points to his name while Finnegan completed a magnificent hat-trick with a second penalty as the clock ticked towards the 60 minute mark, Seneschalstown’s fifth major of the hour.

This was another good win for Declan Byrne’s men and a fine weekend for the club as both men’s teams sit atop their respective Divisions at the end of Round 2, whilst we also fielded a third team who lost out to Meath Hill in the Premier Championship on Friday night
