Seneschalstown’s U-14 Ladies are continuing to make a big impression in Division 1 after a tough physical encounter this evening against Clann na Gael where they emerged victorious by 5-09 to 0-06.

Seneschalstown’s U-14 Ladies are continuing to make a big impression in Division 1 after a tough physical encounter this evening against Clann na Gael where they emerged victorious by 5-09 to 0-06.
The game started at a frenetic pace with the visitors clearly up for a big performance and after some tight tussles in the opening minutes Orla Finnegan sent over the first score to settle the Furze team after five minutes. A probing run from midfield saw a Caragh Monaghan effort go wide but when Clann na Gael answered right back with a fine score the sizeable crowd knew they were in for a treat of football with honest and gutsy play on show from both teams.
Ava Jane Ryan who is enjoying her football out the field this season pushed the home team ahead but again the visitors replied with a point. Meath full back Ali Sherlock was in fine form in the middle of the field but the combination of midfielders Caragh Monaghan and Lauren Donnelly helped snuff out her threat with both girls working tirelessly and both combining to score a point apiece to extend the home side advantage by two.
Again possession was very hard earned with both defences on top but with some excellent passing Mallaidh Breen found herself in space and after a thirty metre run buried her shot into the railway end goal to give the home side some breathing room. With five minutes remaining in the half Sinéad McLarney finished a brilliant move to the same net and upon resumption from the kick out Orla Finnegan, ever the opportunist found the back of the net. This was a critical moment in the game as it gave the home team a great cushion going into half time as the scoreboard now read Seneschalstown 3-04 Clann na Gael 0-02.
The second half started with a fine point from wing forward Ella Kilfeather but then the Athboy outfit began to dominate possession reeling off three unanswered points, narrowing the gap to 3-05 to 0-05. The Seneschalstown defence was magnificent with Aoibhe Monaghan at centre half back flanked by Zoe Kirwan and Lauren McCarthy, the versatile Anna Wogan, Aine Nangle and Sadhbh McLarney and between the posts Robyn Murray who kept another clean sheet enhancing her growing reputation. They held firm in possession, eventually frustrating the Athboy forwards.
Sinéad McLarney was tormenting their full back line and when Seneschalstown broke out of defence at pace and after a sweeping move down the field found McLarney she struck for her second goal of the evening and took huge pressure off the Furze Girls. Ali Sherlock then scored a fine point from play for the Athboy/Rathcairn outfit. Ava Jane Ryan popped over two frees before midfielder Caragh Monaghan was taken down for a penalty with ten minutes to go. Ava Jane stepped up but managed to skim the crossbar with a powerful strike that just went over for a single point.
The full forward line of Caoimhe Dunne, McLarney and Ryan were very effective and entering the final few minutes with weary legs on both sides McLarney found the back of the net again for her hat-trick and Ms. Ryan finished the game off with another well taken free. Substitutes Zoe Ryan for McLarney, Niamh Traynor for Dunne and Charlie Murray for Anna Wogan combined greatly to the win.
This was A tough encounter where the girls were tested to the limit and found out a lot about their character and guts to ensure the points were staying in Seneschalstown. With Two wins from three in Division 1 football this group of girls just keep answering the call. Clann na Gael provided a stern test and credit to them for contributing to a fine game of football.
