AFL Division 4 Round 2

Seneschalstown 0-07 Cortown 3-11

Seneschalstown made the trip to Cortown for the second round of the AFL Division 4 on Wednesday night, but unfortunately left empty handed following a strong performance from the hosts.

Inside the opening minute the home side put down an early marker with 1-01 for themselves before Seneschalstown had even managed to get the ball out of their half. The visitors soon settled, points from Dylan Keating and Johnny Gilsenan. Cortown responded with a brace of their own, but Gilsenan was having a positive opening and put over his second point in the 7th minute. From the resulting kick out, Jack Owens broke the ball to himself, before taking off on a strong run at the heart of the Cortown defence. Owens shrugged off a number of challenges before putting the ball over off the outside of his right foot. Dylan Keating engineered some space for himself to score in the 19th minute but was to be as good as it got for Seneschalstown as the home side kicked the last four points of the half to leave themselves six points to the good at half time , 1-08 to 0-05.

The second half was certainly a more scrappy affair, the game becoming very stop start which threatened to boil over on a few occasions. A free from Dylan Keating reduced the gap to five but some wayward shooting, and some good Cortown defending cost Seneschalstown the opportunity to get any closer. In the last 15 minutes, with the visitors reduced to 14 men, Cortown built on their lead by adding 2-02 to their tally before Seneschalstown were able to score again, Johnny Gilsenan on target again. With the last kick of the game, Cortown pointed a free to leave themselves 13 point victors. Seneschalstown will be looking to bounce back from this disappointing setback in the next round. The one positive Seneschalstown could take from the game was the performance of some of the younger lads who to be fair, gave a very good account of themselves when things were not going in their favour.
