Meath Ladies U-12 Championship Round 5

Seneschalstown 7-05 Clan Na Gael 3-01

Seneschalstown’s U-12 Girls showed great determination and skill in seeing off the determined challenge of Clan Na Gael in damp conditions Fr. Tully Park on Saturday.

The visitors were first on the scoreboard with a point from play but on five minutes Nicola Mongey opened the Furze girls account with a goal. An even contest was ensuing as the Gaels struck for a goal to go back in front again but this was cancelled out soon afterwards as Mongey again found the back of the net. Both teams were giving it their all with play see-sawing up and down the pitch. In the twelfth minute Mongey again found the back of the next to complete her hat trick. Tara Traynor then opened her account with an excellent point from play and added a second soon after but the visitors kept attacking and were rewarded with a second goal just before the break to leave the HT score at 3-02 to 2-01.

When the game resumed for the second period there was no let-up in the intensity from either team. Just like she did in the first half, Nicola Mongey open the scoring for the home team with her fourth goal in the twenty third minute but this was soon cancelled out by the visitors who found the back of the net. This proved to be the visitors last score as the Seneschalstown rear guard of Molly Keating, Amy Kennedy, Maeve Hickey, Tara Traynor and Ali Clarke who had switched from goals with Charlie Murray who was carrying a knock upped their game and contested for everything. Midfield duo of Robyn Murray and Megan Clarke were having a great battle with their opponents and Clarke got on the score sheet with 1-1 in quick succession.

The old adage of your first line of defence is your forwards and that was very evident as Abby Hewitt, Nicola Mongey, Kerri Laverty, Lauren McGuirk, Holy Knowles, Claire Finnegan and Kellie Stafford tackled well and didn’t let the visitors out of defence easily often turning over possession. Finnegan, who had started as a half back then got in on the scoring act by deflecting a Robyn Murray effort past the keeper before Traynor added to her account with a goal. Megan Clarke added a point with a couple of minutes to go before Mongey closed out the scoring with a point.

Both Seneschalstown and Clan Na Gael deserve great credit for their skill and efforts over the 40 or so minutes and the final score line probably doesn’t do justice to the visitor’s efforts.

Great news for the clubs also with the news that four of our panel Robyn and Charlie Murray, Tara Traynor and Megan Clarke had made the Meath U-12 panel for 2016.

The only unfortunate incident was a serious arm injury to Holly Knowles who will be out of action for six weeks after breaking a bone in her arm. The Club, U-12 management and the team would like to wish Holly a speedy recovery.

Team. Ali Clarke, Amy Kennedy, Charlie Murray, Tara Traynor (1-02), Claire Finnegan (1-00), Maeve Hickey, Robyn Murray, Megan Clarke (1-02), Holly Knowles, Abbey Hewitt, Kellie Stafford, Nicola Mongey (4-01), Kerrie Laverty, Lauren McGuirk, Molly Keating
