U-17 League Division 4 Round 6

Seneschalstown 2-15 Ratoath 2-14

Seneschalstown moved onto eight points and into second position in the table when emerging from a tough encounter in Sean Eiffe Park with a one point victory which was secured courtesy of a late, late point from wing forward Robert Wogan.

Wogan had opened the scoring in the second minute when clipping over a point from play before three similar efforts from Ratoath had them two to the good. Jason Kearney hit back for Seneschalstown when finding the back of the net after eight minutes as the visitors edged themselves back in front, Kearney finishing with aplomb after excellent work out the field by Conor Cantwell.

Ryan O’Dowd stretched the Seneschalstown advantage when reacting quickest to a short forty five from Danny Reilly to fire over before Cathal Finnegan added another after gathering the rebound following a blocked O’Dowd goal attempt which had been struck straight at the goalkeeper when well picked out behind the Ratoath defence by the alert Eoin Finnegan. Brian Maguire then kicked a point after racing through away from the defenders, this score quickly followed up by another O’Dowd point.

Ratoath then hit a goal and a point in the space of a minute to haul themselves back into the match before Danny Reilly became the seventh Seneschalstown player to register a score when pointing. The two sides then exchanged points to close out the first half scoring with Eoin Finnegan replying to a Ratoath effort. This leaving Seneschalstown two points to the good, 1-08 to 1-06.

Ratoath opened the second half in blistering form hitting the first three points to edge one ahead before Eoin Finnegan brought the two teams back onto level terms when his free from the right of the uprights clipped the left hand post before dropping over. Conor Cantwell then took over forty five duties and his short ball to second half substitute David Gordon reaped benefits when Gordon found O’Dowd who kicked his third point of the evening. Seneschalstown then employed their third forty five taker from three attempts and this time Ryan O’Dowd found Robert Wogan who kicked another score to push his side two ahead.

Ratoath then showed their ability to score in bursts when kicking a quickfire goal and two points to go three ahead, 2-11 to 1-11 after forty three minutes. Seneschalstown’s habit of going for goals when the easy point was on seemed to be costing them but Wogan, after his goal attempt was saved managed to get onto the loose ball to point, thus reducing the deficit to three.

The hosts then restored their advantage with a pointed free before Brian Maguire rattled their net with a well placed shot to bring the sides level once more. Wogan edged Seneschalstown one point ahead when receiving the ball out on the right before sprinting in the direction of the goals and knocking the ball over the bar. He then kicked another high into the rapidly darkening sky to put Seneschalstown into the driving seat with seven minutes remaining.

Ratoath though are a side who were determined to take something from the match and digging deep kicked two points of their own in the fifty sixth and sixty first minutes to restore the equilibrium of this absorbing match.

However, the lively Wogan was to have the final say when kicking his sixth point of the match and fifth of the half deep into stoppage time to secure the two points for Seneschalstown. Among those who had very good performances for Seneschalstown were Conor Cantwell, Danny Reilly and Ryan O’Dowd.
