Simonstown 3-09 Seneschalstown 0-14

Seneschalstown Senior ladies crossed the river Boyne to Simonstown on Wednesday night to try to pick up some badly needed points against the table toppers of Division 1 was always going to be a hard ask and they almost came away with a win on a memorable night after a hard-fought defeat which saw them concede 2 goals in the last 5 minutes of the game.

Missing key players of the quality of Nina Murphy and Grainne Nulty due to sickness and injury compounded the task ahead for this young team but what fight and effort did they bring. From the off it was clear that the Furze Girls were really up for this game and were not going down without a battle and battle they did.

Simonstown opened the scoring but the Furze girls were enjoying the majority of possession with Kiah Geraghty opening their account. An excellent point from Louise Coyle was cancelled out by the Navan outfit and they were beginning to show why they are the league leaders with two excellent saves from goalie Louise Byrne denying them 2 clear cut goal chances. U-16 star Aoife Lenihan popped over a fine point followed by another from full forward Louise Coyle. The Furze Girls were guilty of several wides before Simonstown pounced with the first goal of the game from a goalmouth scramble that looked under control but ended up in the back of the net.

Showing great hunger and attitude the Seneschalstown young guns responded magnificently scoring the next 5 points to Simonstown’s 2. Kiah Geraghty knocked over 1, Stacey Grimes with 2 and U-15 star Caragh Monaghan kicking 2 excellent points from play. The half finished with Seneschalstown up by a point despite conceding the first half goal.

Half Time: Simonstown 1-05 Seneschalstown 0-09

A second half of end to end football was enthralling with Cheesey popping over a fine point. A point from Kiah Geraghty again showing her accuracy followed over but Simonstown were keeping in touch with two points also. With 15 minutes to go the game was in the melting pot when Shona Loughran scored a fine point that whizzed over the crossbar but again the town team responded with a class point from Molly Byrne. The Seneschalstown defence was been tested and when Kelsey Nesbitt was bearing down on goal she went to shoot slightly off balance and under a last gasp tackle from Aoibhe Monaghan, she fell awkwardly and had to withdraw after a lengthy delay. Wishing Kelsey a speedy recovery from all at the club.

The resultant free drew the teams level with 8 minutes left. Kiah Geraghty pushed the Furze Ladies ahead again and the game was entering its final 4 minutes a shock result looked on the cards. A speculative shot from Simonstown for a point hit the post high up and the rebound was pounced on and finished to the net to give Simonstown the lead for the first time right on the hour mark. Seneschalstown drove forward and were unlucky not to score a dramatic late goal themselves.

All the pressure resulted in a free being converted by Stacy Grimes reducing the margin to a solitary point. With all out attack now the Furze Girls pushed for the equaliser but Simonstown broke out at speed and 2 long kicks down the field found a Simonstown player who buried the ball to the back of the net. It was the last act of a wonderful game of football with both teams trading scores all the way through and emptying themselves on the pitch.

This young Seneschalstown side were very unlucky to not get something from the game but that’s sport and another huge experience for our younger girls. Dunboyne up next in the final round of the league where a win is a must to survive relegation from Division 1.
