Life in Division 1 began for the Seneschalstown U-14 Girls with a game against champions Dunboyne on Saturday morning in Fr Tully Park at 10:30.

The girls began nervously but soon realised that they were well able to go toe to toe with the county’s best. By half time a fortuitous goal from Dunboyne separated the teams. Dunboyne scored some excellent long range points to lead 1-5 to 0-3 at half time. An excellent point from Ella Kilfeather after great work from midfielders Lauren Donnelly and Caragh Monaghan kept us in touch.

Upon the resumption belief really began to run through this super group of girls resulting in a great goal from Mallaidh Breen. Dunboyne knew they were in a game when a point from Ava Jane Ryan reduced the margin to the bare minimum. Another great goal from the live wire Orla Finnegan nudged the underdogs in front but Dunboyne showed why they are champions by kicking three unanswered points from Aideen Jones and Emma Duggan who were very well marked by Zoe Kirwan and Aoibhé Monaghan. Lauren McCarthy Aine Nangle defended superbly. A point up Dunboyne were awarded a penalty with five minutes remaining and this was brilliantly put away by Duggan with a superb effort from the exciting prospect of goalie Robyn Murray inches from saving at full stretch.

This was the defining score that gave Dunboyne some breathing space. The Seneschalstown girls gave their all to narrow the gap put the clock was their enemy. They can take great heart from this performance in defeat and proves that they deserve to be at the top table in Meath. This team will leave their mark on this Division in what will be sure to be an exciting competition.
