Seneschalstown Senior Ladies defeated Oldcastle in Round 5 of the Ladies Senior league with a late scoring spree to secure their first brace of points of the season in a sunny Fr Tully Park on Saturday evening.

Seneschalstown Senior Ladies defeated Oldcastle in Round 5 of the Ladies Senior league with a late scoring spree to secure their first brace of points of the season in a sunny Fr Tully Park on Saturday evening.

The visitors from North Meath had the upper hand early on and led by two points before Fiona Mahon open the home teams account from play after about ten minutes which was soon followed up by a Róisín Commons point from play to draw the side’s level. Just after the quarter hour Louise Coyle was fouled for a penalty and after receiving some attention got to her feet and struck home to give the home team the lead for the first time. Grace Cahalane increased the home sides lead with a point from play after a good build up from the back. However Oldcastle got to grips with the game and tagged on two goals and three points without reply to lead by five points coming up to the break but the home team sprang into action again and scored two quick fire goals from Mahon and Coyle to give the home team a one point interval advantage.

The second half began with Oldcastle on top again and scored a goal and two points in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half. However in the last quarter the Furze Ladies pushed hard to get back into the game and although they kicked a few wides the girls never gave up. The comeback started with a Commons point from play. Shortly afterwards Edel McGrane score a deserved point from play after some great work. Commons continued to be a major influence and cut the deficit to one. Full back Mena Sheridan was pushing further up the pitch now and scored the equaliser on the stroke of full time after Coyle had a shot blocked by the Oldcastle goalie. Not settling for a draw the home team won the kick out eventually transferring the ball to Coyle who swung over the winning score. The final whistle sounded shortly afterwards to a loud cheer from the supporters.

Both teams deserve great credit for the fair served up and this was a great team performance from the home side who are getting better with each outing.
