Meath U-15 Division 2 League Round 1

Seneschalstown 3-12 Navan O’Mahonys 2-19

Navan O’Mahonys came to Fr. Tully Park on Sunday morning to take on their hosts and following an excellent encounter went away fully deserving of the two points on offer. Central to their victory was a brilliant opening spell in the second half while they responded very well to a Seneschalstown rally which drew the team’s level once more with fifteen minutes remaining.

The town side were first to register a score when pointing a first minute free before Seneschalstown pulled them back when on a foray forward Sean Carey split the posts. Centre back Simon Rooney and Cillian Gormley added further points before O’Mahonys recorded three on the bounce. Alan Mulvany drew the team’s level in the tenth minute, a score which was followed by one from Ross Mullen.

O’Mahonys then went on a bit of a scoring burst when hitting three in a row in four minutes, a scoring run which was interrupted by a Daire Finnegan effort from play. His centerfield partner Joseph Moore added his first when firing over a great score before Sean Commons reacted quickest to an Alan Mulvany effort which came back off the post to clip over. Then in the twenty first minute both sides managed to find the net. Firstly Navan O’Mahonys raised a green flag only to see that effort cancelled out when Sean Commons rattled the back of the net when he got on the end of a sweeping move involving Brian Boyd, Ross Mullen and Daire Finnegan.

Simon Rooney then sent an effort booming over from distance before Padraig Finnegan pulled off a fine stop in the Seneschalstown goal to prevent a goal. O’Mahonys reduced the Seneschalstown lead to a solitary point when registering a marvellous point, but Dylan Keating brought the first half scoring to a close when picking off a point from play to send his side in 1-10 to 1-08 ahead at the break of play.

When the match resumed Navan O’Mahonys hit the ground running when rattling off a goal and seven points in the first eleven minutes. Seneschalstown looked to be in deep trouble at this stage but suddenly sparked to life when Dylan Keating found Sean Carey and following a surging run his point effort dropped short only for Ross Mullen to expertly react quickest and squeeze a shot on goal in. Alan Mulvany and Simon Rooney then pointed before Cillian Gormley hit the home side’s third goal. Suddenly the sides were level once more.

This score however seemed to spark the boys from the town side back into action and they managed to hit the last four points of the game as Seneschalstown squandered some scoring opportunities.

Navan O’Mahonys were full value for this win but for Seneschalstown there was also much to be happy with and they will look forward to the remainder of this league with confidence. Best for them in this game were Sean Carey, Simon Rooney and Alan Mulvany.
