One Step To Go

Meath Premier Football Championship Division 4 Semi-Final

Seneschalstown 2-11 Clann na Gael 0-07

Seneschalstown have advanced to the Premier football Championship Division 4 final for the second year in a row as a result of Saturday’s win over Clann na nGael in Fr. Tully Park. Ian Maguire’s charges were hoping to avenge their Round 1 defeat to Saturday’s semi-final opponents, which they did in a dominant manner as they lead from pillar to post.

James Conlon and Brendan Lynch got Seneschalstown up and running for the hour with a point each from play inside the five minutes, before the visitors registered their first point in the seventh minute. Conlon got his second point after Will Finnegan intercepted a Clann na Gael and laid the ball off to him, before Finnegan got himself a point from play as the hosts enjoyed a three point lead at the water break.

Conlon was having a productive half, and he converted two frees from pretty much identical positions. In the run up to half time, the away side put together their only consecutive points of the hour, but Oisín McEvoy rounded out the half with a point for himself. Seneschalstown lead 0-07 to 0-3 at the interval.

Clann na Gael opened the scoring in the second period with a point but that was as close as they would get to the home side as last year’s beaten finalists started to pull awayas they half went on. With 44 minutes on the clock, Damien Sheridan broke Seneschalstown’s scoring duck when he won a kickout and spotted the goalkeeper off his line. His attempt on goal dropped just over the bar. However, the keeper was not to be as lucky four minutes later. After soloing out from goal to the 45’, his pass went straight to Sheridan. Sheridan spotted substitute Tommy Ledwidge unmarked inside and he had the simplest task of turning and sliding the ball into an empty net which even at that stage made victory look inevitable for Seneschalstown. The visitors replied with a point, but James Conlon capped a fine individual display with an opportunist goal. Will Finnegan’s shot rebounded off the post and Conlon was there to pick up the rebound and slot the ball into the top right hand corner. Substitute Daire Finnegan made a telling impact with two fine points for himself, the second a nice effort off the outside of his right boot, before the teams swapped points to close out the game as Conlon brought his tally for the day to 1-05.

This was an impressive display from Seneschalstown who will be eager to atone for last year’s final loss to Carnaross. This time around their opponents will be Blackhall Gaels who won the final round group stage game between the sides, so the Furze men will not be short of motivation for this year’s finale.
