Meath Ladies U-12 Division 2 Championship semi-final

Seneschalstown 3-08 Wolfe Tones 1-00

Seneschalstown qualified for the U-12 Div. 2 Cup final with a well-deserved victory over Wolfe Tones in sunny Fr. Tully Park on Wed evening.

It didn’t take long for the home team to open the scoring as Claire Finnegan lofted over the first score inside thirty seconds which was soon followed by a major from Tara Traynor, soccer style, after the ball broke in front of her in the third minute. This was the last score of the first quarter as the Wolfe Tones settle in and defended well and started to attack a bit more but they came up against a strong defence led by the excellent Katie McDonnell and Robyn Murray ably assisted by Molly Keating, Amy Kennedy and Maeve Hickey. Anything that got past them was dealt with by Aly Clarke between the posts. The first quarter ended with the score at 1-01 to 0-00.

With Orla Lynch now into the action, the second quarter started with the Furze girls on top but a few wayward shots kept the scorekeeper redundant. Half way through Meadhbh Hickey scored an excellent point after fielding well and this was soon followed up by a goal from midfielder Megan Clarke who along with Charlie Murray were dictating things in that area of the pitch. The Tones then opened their account with a goal from play but Clarke had the last say with her second score of the quarter to leave the HT score at 2-03 to 1-00.

The third quarter saw the introduction of Sophie Sharpe and Laura Masterson into the full forward line and with the industrious Kelly Stafford, Abby Hewitt and Carley Lynch winning their fair share of possession the furze girls pushed on and to the delight of all both Sharpe and Masterson scored a point apiece to leave the score at 2-05 to 1-00 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the introduction of Lauren McGuirk and her tackling along with Tara Traynor ended up in the ball being over carried which allowed Traynor to pop over a free early in the quarter. Next on the scoreboard was Katie McDonnell with a deserved goal and soon afterward Stafford popped over a point from play. Traynor completed the scoring in the final minute with her second point for a deserved victory.

Again the strength of the squad was evident as a few regulars were missing but girls give it their all no matter who plays which gives the management a good headache with team selection.

The final is expected to be on the weekend of June 25th. More detail to follow in due course.
