Seneschalstown 1-5 Skyrne 1-14

Skryne recorded a comprehensive victory over Seneschalstown in the A FL Div 1 final at Walterstown on Sunday last.

Seneschalstown came into the final having played a huge amount of football in the past two months and Skryne always looked the sharper and hungrier side and they never appeared in danger of being caught once they stamped their authority on the match in the opening half. They led from start to finish and scored a tally of 1-9 from play. Joe Sheridan blasted home a goal from a late penalty for Seneschalstown to make the scoreline more respectable, but by that stage Skryne were out of sight and ready to take possession of the Mooney Cup for the first time.

Against a tired Seneschalstown side, Skryne must still be given their dues in the way they moved the ball out of defence, created openings and took their chances. The score that really set them on the way to the title came in the twentieth minute when the impressive James Looby sent a probing ball in from the left and Mick O`Dowd rose highest to fist past Seneschalstown goalkeeper David Geraghty, who replaced the injured David Lyons.

That gave them a 1-4 to 0-1 advantage and with Felim O`Rourke kicking five points (four frees) and Aidan Tuite notching two in the opening period they were looking good with a 1-7 to 0-4 interval cushion.

Skryne suffered a huge set back when 2004 Keegan Cup winning captain John Quinn was forced to retire injured from centre-back after 24 minutes, but they re grouped and never looked under any pressure. Joe Sheridan scored two of Seneschalstown`s first-half points from play, with Brian Clarke and Brian Sheridan completing the tally from frees, but they did have a clearcut goal chance soon after Quinn`s departure. Stephen Sheridan`s long delivery was knocked down by Brian Sheridan into the path of Shane Clarke, but his shot was brilliantly saved by talented Skryne `keeper Patrick O`Rourke.

Brian Sheridan gave Seneschalstown some hope when he kicked a superb point 15 seconds after the restart, but the Skryne lead stretched to 1-10 to 0-5 by the three-quarter stage after Looby, O`Rourke and O`Dowd had pointed from play and it was indicative of their confidence that Allan Carty slotted over their 11th point within 20 seconds of his introduction.

Both sides merely went through the motions as the light faded and Skryne`s advantage stood at11 points when Brian Clarke was fouled a minute from the end of normal time. There was a delay in taking the penalty as referee Gerry McGivney booked goalkeeper O`Rourke, but Joe Sheridan then stepped up and converted to the net with ease.

There was still time for Trevor Giles to cap a typically composed performance with a well-taken point for a Skryne team that will go into next year`s championship with renewed hope after finishing 2007 on a high.
