Wednesday 20th April 2011: Seneschalstown 4-17 Vs St.Ultan’s 1-11

The clash of the titans of Meath Ladies football got underway for 2011 when Seneschalstown and St.Ultan’s met in Round 2 of the Div 1 League last Wednesday in Seneschalstown. Seneschalstown Senior Ladies laid down the gauntlet for 2011 to the current County champions and this will make an exciting year for both teams in their preparation for the 2011 championship campaign.
Both teams got off to a slow start and it took a while for the teams to settle. The first scoring free fell to Seneschalstown ladies when Orla Sheridan was fouled on the 13 yard line. Fiona Mahon stepped up to take it and her kick hit the far upright post but fell back into her hands which she then slotted over the bar. St. Ultan’s first score came from the boot of Shauna Bennett through normal play. The flow of the game was even between the two teams in the first half. Seneschalstown got the first goal of the game from the boot of Mena Sheridan but just over 5 minutes after this St.Ultan’s replied from the boot of Linda Smith. This left the score at half time to the better for St.Ultan’s at 1-6 to 1-3 respectively. Seneschalstown were three points down after a lot of wides by both teams in the first half.
The second half started completely different than the first and Seneschalstown literally hit the ground running. They scored five points in the first five minutes unanswered. To get these points they won every kick-out of St.Ultan’s and the ball never got past the half way line for St.Ultan’s to reply. This spell of scores spurred Seneschalstown on to an amazing scoring spree for the whole of the second half. After these five points Emma Harris found the net for Seneschalstown’s second goal. The score was 2-9 for Seneschalstown before St.Ultan’s added to their tally with a point from Irene Munnelly. Seneschalstown received a good number of frees in their forward area and one of these lead to the third goal when Grainne Nulty kicked a long range ball which dropped into the hands of the goalie who then fumbled the ball into the net. Even with a yellow card to Seneschalstown’s full back, Edel McGrane, it was hard to stop the amount of possession that they received. Seneschalstown’s corner forward, Aoife Sheridan, won one of St.Ultan’s kick outs and Fiona Mahon came running through in support and tapped the ball over the bar. Overall the second half performance from the home team was outstanding and it was very hard to stop their continued forward pressure on the St.Ultan’s defence. Seneschalstown’s defence were also like a brick wall for the half while St.Ultan’s fast forwards tried to break it down.
