Seneschalstown captured their fifth consecutive Division 1 League title in an entertaining game at Dunsany on Sunday 16th November against Boardsmill.
Intermediate finalists Boardsmill fought hard for the entire game and will prove to be tough opposition if they advance to the senior ranks in the next few years. Seneschalstown raced into an early lead with the outstanding Fiona Mahon once again to the fore with a goal inside the first quarter. Mahon finished with 2-6 to her credit and along with Grainne Nulty at midfield, caused plenty of problems for the Boardsmill rearguard in the first half.
Despite Seneschalstown’s early lead (1-3 to 0-0), Boardsmill struck back to within a point and dominated for a period before Seneschalstown again increased their lead with Nulty finishing to the net with a powerful left-footed shot.
Boardsmill again rallied in the second half with Christine O’ Brien and Michelle Doyle causing problems for the holders defence however Seneschalstown replied with goals from Sally-Ann Carolan and Mahon to ensure victory for the current Leinster champions. Best for Seneschalstown were Nulty, Mahon, Carolan and Laura Carey and Orla Sheridan in defence. Vice-captain Elaine Dillon received the Leo McGivern Memorial Cup from the County Board Chairman.
The club will be hoping to add their final piece of silverware for 2003 when they meet 2001 champions Donoughmore of Cork in the All-Ireland Senior Club Final on November 30th at a neutral venue.
