Seneschalstown (Meath) 0 – 12 v Timahoe (Laois) 2 – 8

Laois champions Timahoe put in a late rally to claim the Leinster senior club championship crown on Sunday last with a 2 point winning margin. Player of the match Martina Dunne notched up a personal tally of two goals and four points to give her side the coveted senior title. Timahoe got the game off to a dream with in thirty seconds of the throw in, when Martina Dunne first strike of the game hit the back of Louise Byrnes goal, Eimear O’Carroll and Fiona Mahon struck back with a point apiece, Timahoe’s next score came after a slick move involving Angela Casey, Becky McPhilbin and Maggie Murphy, the trio carved their way through the Seneschalstown backs to find Martina Dunne, Dunne tagging on her second score of the game to open a two point gap (1-1 to 0-2).

The Meath side fought back to level the sides with score from Fiona Mahon, and two points from Roisin Nulty. Seneschalstown were dealt a body blow in the twentieth minute when referee Joe Murray ordered their influential defender Philomena Sheridan to the sin bin after fouling Timahoe’s number fourteen Martina Dunne. The Laois club side took full advantage adding a further goal and three points, while Seneschalstown only reply came from Mary Sheridan to leave four points between the sides at the break (2-4 to 0-6)

From the restart Seneschalstown, now back to full strength pinned Timahoe in to their own half of the pitch for almost twenty minutes of the second period. Two Points from Grainne Nulty, and a point apiece from Fiona Mahon and Eimear Carroll levelled the scores after eight minutes ( 2-4 to 0-10), the Royals continued to press with Grainne Nulty and Fiona Mahon leading the charge, with the narrowest of margins separating the sides, in Seneschalstown’s favour at the end of the third quarter (2-4 to 0-11).

However anybody that watched Timahoe over the past couple of weeks would be well aware that they are at their most dangerous when they are on the back foot, ask Clonee of Wexford, who suffered at the hands of Timahoe in the Leinster semi final replay, the Wexford club thought they were over the winning line until Timahoe pulled the rug from beneath their boots in the final minutes of their game.

The O’Moore side regrouped and with less than seven minutes remaining Dunne fired over her third point of the game but Mahon was quick to respond, but as hard as they tried Seneschalstown were unable to stop Liz Cahill and Dunne from tagging on a point a piece to give Timahoe the Leinster Senior club championship title for 2009.

Leinster Secretary Cathal Friel was on hand to present Timahoe Captain Grainne Dunne with the Senior cup, while Martina Dunne stepped up to collect the player of the match award. On behalf of the Leinster County Board, Cathal thanked all those involved on the day, in particular Athy GAA Club for the use of their excellent facilities at Geraldine Park.
