Meath Ladies U-13 Division 1 Shield Final

Seneschalstown 0-13 St. Colmcilles 1-04

Getting to a final is always a huge achievement, and after last week’s disappointment at narrowly missing out on a place in the Cup Final, Seneschalstown headed to Skryne on Saturday 12th November for the U13 Division 1 Shield Final against a strong St Colmcilles outfit. Defeat was not an option for the Seneschalstown girls and from the first throw in they drove on in waves constantly breaking down the Cilles defence and coming out with a well-deserved victory 0–13 to 1–04.

Zoe Kirwan won the ball from the throw in and linked up with Tara Traynor who passed into Anna Wogan who pointed after just 10 seconds. This set the tone for the way in which the match was to be played. Over the next few minutes Seneschalstown continued to pressure the Cilles defence with great play from Megan Clarke, Ella Kilfeather, Lauren McGuirk and Nicola Mongey forcing them to commit a series of fouls, Anna Wogan made no mistake in slotting the first 2 frees between the uprights and on the third attempt passed the ball into Zoe Kirwan who gave it straight back to Anna who then off loaded to Tara Traynor who kicked the ball over the bar for a lovely score.

The Cilles girls then went on a run themselves and managed to take the next score but Seneschalstown just would not lie down and after a foul on Ella Kilfeather, Anna put over another point. The Cilles girls were battling hard but Seneschalstown were staunch in defence, Charlie Murray, Caoimhe Dunne, Sadhbh McLarney and Robyn Murray all determined to keep them at bay. Tara Traynor then took another lovely score from play. Zoe Kirwan took the next free from just inside the half way line, passing the ball to Tara Traynor who passed back allowing Zoe to kick the ball over the bar. Robyn Murray was unlucky not to get the next point as her shot just fell short, but she went on to win the next kick out passing the ball into Abbey Hewitt who was fouled allowing Anna Wogan to score yet another free. Cilles got the final point of the first half leaving the score Seneschalstown 0-08 to St Colmcilles 0-02.

After good attacking moves from Nicola Mongey and Ella Kilfeather, the Cilles girls again committed fouls, allowing Anna Wogan to take the first 2 scores of the second half both from frees. A lovely move from Robyn Murray, found Anna Wogan and then Zoe Kirwan who pointed from open play. Cilles went on a counter attack only to be stopped by a good tackle from Meadhbh Hickey but the Cilles girls battled on taking the next point. The Cilles girls seemed to have found a new determination and put our defence to the test but with Megan Clarke tracking back well and great defence from Sadhbh McLarney, Caoimhe Dunne and the Murray twins.

Seneschalstown for the most part held firm but after this sustained spell of play Cilles did find manage to find the back of the net. Seneschalstown never let their heads drop and pushed on again, Nicola Mongey this time pointing from open play. Anna Wogan then scored a free after Nicola Mongey was fouled. This was to be the last score of the game as Zoe Kirwan was denied when her shot on goal hit the post. Seneschalstown were victorious and deservedly so with fantastic performances all round. Final score Seneschalstown 0-13 St Colmcilles 1-04.

Congratulations to all the girls and to the management team of Catherine Traynor, Dearbhla Carroll and Grainne Nulty who worked hard all season to achieve this goal.
