Meath A League Division 1 Round 5

Seneschalstown 1-06 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 3-09

The travails of Seneschalstown in the early stages of the League continued on Thursday evening when their understrength side went down by nine points in a sunny Fr. Tully Park. Trailing by three points at the interval after gifting their opponents a goal they never got going again in the second and when they conceded two goals in a minute entering the final third of the game their hopes of victory were all but over.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne got the first two points of the game before Brian Sheridan kicked three points in a row to push Seneschalstown into the lead after 17 minutes. Two of these efforts came from forty fives with the other coming from play after good work from his brother Joe and Niall Groome. Indeed his side could potentially have had a goal before his second forty five but Niall Lyons saw his effort on goal from a quick free blocked out.

The Ashbourne men though soon edged in front when punishing sloppy play in the Seneschalstown defence to nab their first goal. Brian Sheridan kept Seneschalstown in touch with a free after Peter Waters was fouled and then Niall Lyons equalised when his effort squeezed inside the right hand upright. Donaghmore/Ashbourne then closed the half out with three points, two from frees to go in at half time with a three point advantage, 1-05 to 0-05.

This lead was extended sixteen seconds into the second half but Seneschalstown cancelled it out when Brian Sheridan sent over another point. Joe Cowley won a breaking ball and after substitutes Brendan Lynch and Damien Sheridan linked up Brian sent over from distance. Any hopes the home side had of a victory soon disappeared beyond the horizon like the rapidly setting sun when the Moors men kicked two goals in the space of sixty seconds in the fortieth minute.

There was little left to play for in the remainder of a game and although Brian Sheridan converted a penalty it counted for little as Ashbourne added three points from play to run out nine point victors.
