Coca Cola Meath Ladies Senior Football Championship Round 6

Na Fianna 1-03 Seneschalstown 3-08

Seneschalstown overcame the determined challenge of Na Fianna in sunny Baconstown on Monday evening in the latest round of the Coca Cola Senior Championship when they ground out a victory.

Scoring was at a premium in the first twenty minutes and it was the visitor’s ability to get scores at vital times during the game that led to a deserved victory.

On a beautiful evening for football, Stacey Grimes opened the scoring in the second minute from a free and Na Fianna equalised in the fifth minute. The next fifteen minutes saw both teams have several chances but ref Paul Brogan wasn’t required to mark anything on his scorecard as the score remained 0-01 apiece after twenty minutes. The next three minutes were to prove fruitful for the Furze Girls as Grimes added second free in the twenty first minute, Fiona O’Rourke opened her account with a point from play a minute later and then Grimes expertly dispatched a penalty following a foul on Louise Coyle in the twenty fourth minute. Grimes closed out the scoring with another free on the stroke of half time to leave the Furze Girls 1-04 to 0-01 to the good at the break.

Following a couple of injuries in the first half, Na Fianna re-appeared for the second half with fourteen players and it was O’Rourke who opened the scoring for the winners in the thirty second minute but this was cancelled out almost immediately with a pointed free for Na Fianna. The home team were soon restored to fifteen players and it took another ten minutes before the next score arrived as Grimes slotted over a free from thirty-five meters. The winners squandered some good chances and on forty-seven minutes Amy Gilsenan opened her account with a fisted point after a driving run at the Na Fianna defence. Na Fianna got a lifeline a minute later when Lisa Mullen in the Seneschalstown goals could do nothing to keep out a fine goal effort and the deficit was down to five points.

Substitute Ailbhe Rooney extended the Furze Girls lead with a point from play. Rooney gained possession and after a short solo run, sized up her options before taking responsibility and firing over a fine point. With two minutes remaining in normal time, Louise “Cheesey” Coyle put the result beyond doubt with a well taken goal following good work from sub Shona Loughran in winning back possession and after a number of passes Coyle slotted home. Mena Sheridan then got in on the goal scoring act following another fine team move ended up with Sheridan firing the ball to the back of the net. There was still time for Na Fianna to tag on the last point of the game as light was fading fast.

Best for the winners were Edel McGrane, Lizzy Doran who put up the ‘thou shall not pass’ sign at centre back and Mena Sheridan. Next up for Seneschalstown is Boardsmill in Fr Tully Park on Tue Aug 23rd.
