Seneschalstown 05 – 06 to Dunboyne 04 – 10
A cold Friday afternoon in Dunboyne saw the Seneschalstown girls take to the field in their opening game in the Division 1, U-14 Spring League against a typically strong Dunboyne side who already had 1 win under their belt. After a valiant effort, the Seneschalstown girls just ran out of time losing by a single point.

Seneschalstown 05 – 06 to Dunboyne 04 – 10
A cold Friday afternoon in Dunboyne saw the Seneschalstown girls take to the field in their opening game in the Division 1, U-14 Spring League against a typically strong Dunboyne side who already had 1 win under their belt. After a valiant effort, the Seneschalstown girls just ran out of time losing by a single point.
A slow start by the Seneschalstown girls saw the Dunboyne side take an early lead after just 2 minutes. With Dunboyne launching attack after attack and the visitors seemingly second to everything, the Seneschalstown defence found themselves under pressure. During this spell, Robyn Murray managed to pull off a great save with Charlie Murray ready to clear the lines. Some good attacking play through the midfield between Ella Kilfeather, Zoe Kirwan and Anna Wogan put some of the pressure back onto the home side but with several attempts just sailing wide of the uprights, Dunboyne went on a rampage scoring a series of 4 points and 2 goals to no reply from the visitors.
Things were not looking good for Seneschalstown but true to the character that this team showed all last season, heads did not drop and the girls dug deep to settle themselves and win possession of the ball. With great link up play between Zoe Kirwan and Anna Wogan, Anna managed to register her first point of the afternoon. Dunboyne struck back straight away with a further point and another goal. Nicola Mongey saw her shot blocked after good work through the midfield, giving the away side a ‘45. Anna Wogan found Tara Traynor from the 45 who passed back to Wogan who pointed.
The Seneschalstown defenders were being kept very busy but the full back line of Charlie Murray, Caoimhe Dunne and Katie McDonnell were doing their best to keep Dunboyne at bay. Seneschalstown were starting to get more into their stride with good play between Megan Clarke, Tara Traynor, Anna Wogan and Zoe Kirwan causing the Dunboyne defence a few problems. Anna Wogan managing to score a point and a goal both from frees leaving the half time score with Seneschalstown trailing by 1–03 to 3–07.
The Seneschalstown girls came out with a new determination in the second half, a few changes having been made. Meadhbh Hickey moving into the back line and Niamh Treanor making way for Claire Finnegan in corner forward. Ally Clarke having had a busy first half helping out in the half back line alongside, Amy Kennedy, Sadhbh McLarney and Ella Kilfeather, dropped back into goals releasing Robyn Murray into the fray.
The Seneschalstown girls got off to the perfect start with Zoe Kirwan winning the ball from the throw in, quick passing between herself and Anna Wogan and onto Nicola Mongey whose shot sailed through the keepers’ legs and into the back of the net. Seconds later Anna Wogan took the ‘45 and with a super kick saw the ball dip under the crossbar into the goal. Abbey Hewitt was then unlucky to see her kick just go wide of the uprights. Anna Wogan soon slotted over another free but the home side were not going to lie down and scored the next goal and 3 points before Seneschalstown could respond. Good attacking play from Megan Clarke, Zoe Kirwan, Tara Traynor and Anna Wogan saw Claire Finnegan presented with a goal chance but her attempt at goal was saved.
Tiana Kyle who was having her first game with Seneschalstown was thwarting any Dunboyne attacks coming down the left-hand side and showing her strength and vision. Another good link up between Zoe Kirwan and Anna Wogan saw the latter point again from open play and after their next attack when Zoe Kirwan was brought down, Anna Wogan calmly slotted over yet another point. Seneschalstown continued to battle hard in the middle of the field picking up any loose ball and after quick hands between several of the girls, Tara Traynor managed to find Anna Wogan who again found the back of the net.
Momentum with Seneschalstown and determination clear the girls were on the attack and Nicola Mongey brought down in front of the goal resulting in a penalty decision. Mongey stepped up the take it herself and made no mistake as she struck it into the bottom left corner.
Unfortunately, for the Seneschalstown girls time wasn’t on their side and the final whistle went leaving them just a point behind Dunboyne. These girls can all be very proud of their performance on Friday, a valiant effort all round and a performance that they can build on as the season progresses.
