First Half Goal Glut Powers on Juniors

Reserve Cup Division 2 Round 2

Seneschalstown 6-09 Walterstown 3-07

Seneschalstown made a delayed winning start to their Reserve Cup Division 2 campaign with a comfortable victory at home to Walterstown on Sunday morning.   The outcome of this game was never in doubt by half-time as Seneschalstown lead by 13 points, where they ran in five goals in that opening period.

On a breezy and cold morning, Eamon Finnegan kicked over the opening score in the sixth minute with a fine curling effort.  Just over a minute later the goal rush began as Jack McDonnell, who was making his first start at adult level, saw his long range shot deceive the goalkeeper and end up in the net.

In the 13th minute Robbie Finnegan had a similar effort which ended up in the net, and the centre forward was about to have a productive couple of minutes when he tagged on a point and finished off a good team move with a neat finish to the net for Seneschalstown’s third goal just as the clock ticked into the second quarter.

The one way traffic continued and Alex Finnegan clipped over a tidy point from a tight angle.   Robbie Finnegan continued his fine scoring display when he completed a first half hattrick of goals with an absolute rocket which nestled in the top left corner of the net.   Seneschalstown’s fifth goal arrived moments later when Darren O’Brien powered a low drive beyond the keeper to extend the lead.

To their credit Walterstown finished the half with an unanswered 1-02 but were well behind at the break.

Indeed, the visitors started the second half with two further points before Robbie Finnegan settled the home side again with another point.   Walterstown added another 1-02 with Seneschalstown’s only answer being from a David Gordon free as the third quarter progressed.

Seneschalstown got on top again in the final ten minutes when Jack McDonnell finished a quick counter attack with a goal and Gordon found space for himself to kick two further points from play.  Walterstown found the net for a late consolation goal before Eamon Finnegan, who started the scoring, rounded it off for the day with another point from play.

With 19 players unavailable to the Senior team for the Round 2 Feis Cup game on Thursday last, many of these players face a busy schedule with the rearranged Reserve Cup Round 1 game against Duleek/Bellewstown to be played on Wednesday night while the Seniors face Summerhill in the Feis Cup on Thursday.

Also, Seneschalstown would like to wish a speedy recovery to Walterstown player who picked up an injury in the second half.
