Seneschalstown 1-11 Curraha 0-07
Seneschalstown made it three wins from three games in this year’s JM Food Services Football League Division 2 with victory over Curraha at an extremely windy Fr. Tully Park on Saturday afternoon.
Storm Kathleen played havoc with both teams, however Seneschalstown won the toss and opted to play with the aid of the elements in the opening half.
Right from the start Seneschalstown looked to press home this advantage, Alan Mulvany claimed a mark from Danny Waters out on the left and he made no mistake with his shot. Mulvany was quick to double his account, this time with an effort from play off his left foot.
Seneschalstown were looking to kick on quickly in the first half and centre forward Joey Moore got on the end of a move in the fifth minute to clip over Seneschalstown’s third point and they had already asserted full control. From the next kickout, Seneschalstown forced a turnover and won a free which Cathal Finnegan duly converted.
In the 11th minute, Seneschalstown’s best score of the half arrived when Simon Rooney won a ball in his own full-back line. He charged out of defence and picked out Moore with a kick pass. Moore spun and in turn picked out the alert Mulvany inside and he did the rest, kicking over his third point inside the opening 11 minutes.
Seneschalstown were guilty of trying to force a couple of moves in the few minutes after and had to wait until the 18th minute to score again when Cathal Finnegan kicked a close range free when Mulvany was fouled.
Two minutes later Mulvany added a free to his tally after a Eoin Finnegan was halted illegally according to Peter O’Halloran. It took the visitors 22 minutes to score into the breeze and that was a pointed free, but the Seneschalstown response was quick and another Mulvany free brought his first half tally to five points when a boot went in on Joey Moore as he was going down to pick up the ball.
As the half ticked to a close, Cathal Finnegan punished further Curraha indiscipline with another free off the deck and the last say of the half went to Seneschalstown goalkeeper James Meade when he stepped forward to take a long range from from in front of the dugout near the sideline to move Seneschalstown into double figures for the half and give them a nine point lead at the break, 0-10 to 0-01.
Seneschalstown were aware of the danger the breeze would cause in the second half but to their credit, the defence remained resolute early on. From a Seneschalstown point of view scores were ways going to be trickier to come by so keeping Curraha scoreless for the half until the 40th minute was an ideal start.
They followed that up with another point right on the three quarter mark, but moments later Seneschalstown put the game to bed.
Seneschalstown won a free from an excellent Meade kickout into the breeze. Cathal Finnegan, operating on the 40’ at this stage, had the ball in his hands. He spotted his brother Eoin making a move inside and Cathal produced a stunning defence splitting pass which fizzed right through into Eoin’s path. Eoin went around the goalkeeper and slammed the ball home to give Seneschalstown a ten point lead with 14 minutes to go.
Cathal Finnegan extended the advantage to 11 points shortly after Peter O’Halloran gave two players from each side their marching orders.
With wind advantage and the extra space on the field Curraha kicked the final four points down the home straight to reduce the gap back seven points but Seneschalstown were never in trouble and move onto six points from three outings.
Due to the schedule and recent weather, Seneschalstown will hit the road for the first time in the League next Saturday when they make the short trip to play Walterstown at 6pm.
