Seneschalstown 3-09 Trim 2-08
Seneschalstown moved out of the bottom four of the Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5 for the first time this year with a four point win over Trim played in wet conditions in Fr. Tully Park on Sunday morning.
Seneschalstown started very brightly and after six minutes, it looked like Seneschalstown were going to stroll to victory. James Conlon opened the scoring after two minutes with a point from play which Eamon Finnegan added to shortly afterwards with a free after he was fouled.
In the 6th minute, Finnegan was involved again as he made a strong run through the Trim defence before popping off to the onrushing Jack McDonnell who had a relatively simple task of finishing to the net from close range to put Seneschalstown in five points in front.
Trim opened their account in the 9th minute which was cancelled out by another Éamon Finnegan point at the other end. The Reds knocked over two in a row either side of the midway point of the half before Robbie Finnegan saw his effort crash off the crossbar and bounce up for a point rather than a goal. Trim were certainly enjoying their best spell of the game thus far and another brace of white flags had the gap down to two points. There was a goal between them at the break after James Conlon slotted over a free, the free awarded after full-back Ronan Conneely intercepted a ball in his own defence and carried all the way into the Trim D’ before being upended.
Trim started the second half quickly and reduced Seneschalstown’s lead to two points almost instantly. However, this would be the closest the visitors would get as Seneschalstown were about to produce a strong 10 minute spell to secure victory.
Firstly, Mark Fox found himself on the end of a move to put over Seneschalstown’s first score of the second half from the centre of the D’. James Conlon kicked a free in the 33rd minute to move Seneschalstown four in front once more. In the 38th minute, Robbie Finnegan claimed an attacking mark and four minutes later the second major of the hour came Seneschalstown’s way.
The outstanding Ronan Conneely punched a hole in the Trim defence and squared the ball across to James Conlon who finished the ball to the net. In the next attack, Seneschalstown’s lead was out to double figures. Jack McDonnell and Mark Fox combined for the latter to fist the ball across the square. Johnny Gilsenan, who was only on the pitch a matter of seconds, was there to flick the ball beyond the keeper and into the net and it looked like Seneschalstown had victory wrapped up, which was only further enhanced when Conlon was on target again with another point from play after 45 minutes.
However, despite this lead Seneschalstown would fail to score at all in the final quarter as Trim struck for two goals, the second of which reduced the gap to four points. Seneschalstown though, defended resolutely thereafter and when the full time whistle blew Seneschalstown were delighted to come away with the two points. A local derby match away to Skryne awaits Seneschalstown in the next round on Tuesday 4th June.
