Fifth Win for Seneschalstown

Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5 Round 10

Seneschalstown 2-13 Simonstown Gaels 2-09

Seneschalstown picked up their fifth win in the Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5 with a four point win over Simonstown Gaels on Tuesday night. With it came absolute certainty that Seneschalstown will not be dragged into the relegation play-offs and leaves them in seventh place in the table after another strong second half performance.

Simonstown, who came into the game on three points in second last position opened the scoring in the third minute with a point from play.  Seneschalstown’s first score of the hour after five minutes when Darren Laird came in along the end line and sensibly decided to fist over the bar.

Simonstown continued their strong start and notched up 1-01 in the eighth minute which moved them four clear and it looked it could be along evening for a depleted Seneschalstown side.  However their response was excellent.

Seán Commons settled the away side with a point after his long ball in deceived everyone and bounced over the bar. By the 10th minute the Furze men were level with an extremely fortuitous goal when Owen Mullen seemed to be stuck in a corner and swung a leg at the ball. His shot was weak and dropped short, however it hit a bobble on the ground and happened to catch the goalkeeper unawares and rolled beyond him.

Further points from play from the spine of Seneschalstown’s attack, James Conlon and David Fox put Seneschalstown in front for the first time over the course of the hour midway through the half. However Seneschalstown were rocked back on their heels when the Navan men got in for their second goal of the game after 20 minutes. Another point left them 2-05 to 1-05 to the good on the run into the break. Fox and Conlon reduced the arrears to the minimum as the half ended with fine points, Conlon commandeering place kicking duties for the evening .

Simonstown put themselves two points in front again after the break with a swift Seneschalstown riposte coming from Shane Mulvany from the right of goal.  Conlon, who seemed intent on only scoring points that required a serious amount of work, did extremely well again in the 38th minute to create space from himself to score from 30 metres and Seneschalstown were level. A free for the home side followed before Fox popped up with the crucial goal.

After Ronan Conneely got a hand to a loose ball in defence, he did fantastically well to keep the ball on the pitch by fly hacking it downfield which found its way to Shane Mulvany. Mulvany picked out the charging Seán Commons through the middle and as he bore down on goal he could have went  on himself selfishly but he fisted to the unmarked Fox. Fox sidestepped the keeper and finished the ball to the net and now the men in yellow were two to the good.

Conlon added a free and the Seneschalstown lead was fleshed out when Tommy Walsh popped over from an acute angle.  Simonstown halved the lead with two points in a row either side of the 50th minute.

The Seneschalstown lead was back out to a goal when Tommy Walsh put over his second of the night with a superbly instinctive effort, clearly inspired by Euro 2024 as he pulled first time on a ball which came over the top and he arrowed it between the posts. A Conlon free rounded out the scoring as Seneschalstown continued their good recent form in this division, their fourth win in their last five outings.

One final date at home to Cortown awaits Seneschalstown in Round 11 on Sunday 7th July before the commencement of the Championship in August.
