Football League Division 10 Round 2

Seneschalstown 2-09 St. Marys 1-14

Despite a much improved showing from their first round outing, Seneschalstown’s third string were edged out by St. Mary’s in what was a close encounter throughout on Thursday evening in Donore. Conditions were almost ideal, even if there was a moderate breeze blowing towards the clubhouse end by the banks of the River Boyne. Credit to St. Mary’s on a job well done for the work they’ve put in redeveloping their clubhouse and grounds with a new pitch fence and dugouts.

The game was nip and tuck throughout with the lead changing hands on numerous occasions. However, Seneschalstown would have been further behind if it was not for the heroics of goalkeeper Colm McDonnell who made no less than five saves from point blank range to keep his side in the game in the opening half.  It was a stunning display of shot stopping and was even commended by the match referee after the game!

David Fox found the net early on for Seneschalstown with Jamie Kirwan and Ross Mullen (free) also kicking wind assisted two pointers. Mullen added a single point free while Niall McCabe also raised a white flag to leave Seneschalstown 1-06 to 0-06 ahead at the break.

St. Mary’s drew level early in the second half with three points on the trot before Fox buried a second goal to restore the visitors three point cushion.

However after another couple of outstanding saves from McDonnell in the Seneschalstown goal he was finally beaten when the home side played the ball across the goal which was palmed to the net as they picked up some momentum and added a two point effort.

Mullen, Fox and Luke Healy kept Seneschalstown in touch but after hitting the post late on, Seneschalstown were two points short at the final whistle.

After the game, the Man of the Match award was presented to Colm McDonnell for his outstanding display between the posts, while Luke Healy got an award for bringing a friend to increase playing numbers, which did help as Seneschalstown had 18 payers togged out on the evening.
