Shane Clarke’s injury time point made it two wins from as many starts for holders Seneschalstown in Group A of the Meath Farm Machinery SFC on Saturday evening at Ratoath where Dunshaughlin were left to rue several missed chances.
Dunshaughlin looked set to pick up their first point of the campaign until Clarke latched onto a Joe Sheridan free and popped up what proved to be the match-winning score.
There was still time for Gary Farrelly’s men to win the game but substitute Niall Kelly picked up two yellow cards in quick succession and the game ended with Seneschalstown pressing for another score.
Seneschalstown were reduced to 14-men in the 48th minute when centre-half-back Joe Cowley received his second yellow card inside five minutes with the scores tied at 0-9 to 1-6.
Despite numerical superiority, Dunshaughlin never regained the lead but the work-rate of David and Jack Crimmins among other kept them in contention for a first win of the campaign.
The two number 15s – Shane Clarke and Martin Reilly – exhanged pointed frees before the aforementioned match-winning score.
Before Clarke’s sweetly struck match-winner, Dunshaughlin posted three wides with Ray Maloney guilty of a bad miss from a central position.
Dunshaughlin bossed the early exhanges and opened the scoring through Niall Murphy in the fifth minute.
A fine solo Joe Sheridan effort followed by a brace of frees from younger brother Brian moved Seneschalstown 0-3 to 0-1 ahead after ten minutes.
When Reilly opened his account for Dunshaughlin the deficit was down to a point, 0-3 to 0-4, 23 minutes in.
Points from Shane Clarke (free) and Brian Sheridan moved Seneschalstown 0-6 to 0-3 ahead by half-time. Before the teams retired to the dressing rooms, Conor O’Dwyer was wide with an effort at the pavillion end that some thought good.
A pointed Brian Sheridan free from distance moved Seneschalstown four points clear within three minutes of the restart.
Then came Dunshaughlin’s best spell with Niall Murphy flicking a Reilly effort to the Seneschalstown net before Jack Crimmins levelled matters at the end of a flowing move.
Conor Devereux pointed Dunshaughlin in front in the 37th minute only for Shane Clarke to level matters seconds later.
Dunshaughlin passed up the best goal chance in the final quarter when Ray Maloney’s effort was smothered by David Lyons. Subsequently the team in black and amber were awarded a free which Reilly pointed to level matters for the fifth and final time.
