On what can only be described as a perfect evening for football, Seneschalstown and Oldcastle met in the Roinn C final of the Summer League competition in Kilmainham. The north Meath side went into the game as slight favourites having won all their games in the group stages, including a defeat of Seneschalstown by 3 points in July.
However, this time was to be different as Seneschalstown showed their class as they pulled away from their opponents in the second half after a tight first half. Seneschalstown opened the scoring early on when Robbie Wogan pointed after working a quick free with team captain Cathal Finnegan. Oldcastle responded by scoring two frees from their number ten 10. Wogan, from a free, and centre half forward Brian Maguire each pointed to ensure Seneschalstown would go into the lead again. Oldcastle levelled but Seneschalstown started to enjoy more possession over the next 10 minutes outscoring Oldcastle by 1-04 to 0-01. The next two points were scored with Dylan Keating pointing and Finnegan scoring from a 25 metre free for the winners. By this stage Seneschalstown were dominant in nearly every position with Wogan and Adam O’ Mara winning the majority of the kick outs. Andre Norton was steady under the high ball. Alan Mulvany was showing well for the ball as were Keating and Finnegan. Wingbacks Cíaran Mongey and Cillian Gormley as well as wing forwards Cathal Hickey and Fionn Hall were winning lots of breaking ball and linking well with the rest of the forwards. Full back Richard McKeown was not letting anything by him and was receiving valuable help from corner backs Jack Kelleher and Éanna McLarney. Jason Kearney was holding the middle well. A brilliant move upfield saw Wogan charge through the middle before offloading to full forward Alan Mulvany who kept the ball hard and low sending it to the bottom left corner of the net. That score put Seneschalstown five to the good – 1-05 to 0-03. Fionn Hall increased Seneschalstown’s lead to six tapping over after a pass from Wogan. Oldcastle did score but Brian Maguire kicked what would be Seneschalstown’s last score of the half as Oldcastle launched a comeback. Two quick points brought it back to five before a good run by the Oldcastle midfielder saw him drive the ball past Andre Norton. Another point from the boys in blue saw the deficit reduced to a point by half time.
Half Time: Seneschalstown 1-07 Oldcastle 1-06
Oldcastle started the second half on top but failed to turn that possession into scores. With their first meaningful attack of the half Seneschalstown opened their second half account with the point of the game from Wogan. Having won a high ball in the middle of the pitch, he soloed on and from 50 metres sent a high dropping ball over the black spot. Oldcastle did score a thirteen metre free before Seneschalstown hit another purple patch. Wogan started it off pointing a free from the ground before Maguire rounded the keeper to score Seneschalstown’s second goal after collecting the ball on the ‘21’. Mulvany and Finnegan had other goal chances but the Oldacastle goalie made two fine saves. Maguire, Keating and another Wogan free increased the advantage to seven – 2-11 to 1-07. Mulvany found himself in on goal again but another fine save by the keeper denied him. However, the ball was recycled to Keating who buried the ball into the net. Oldcastle did get a point back but Seneschalstown went on another scoring spree. Wogan pointed another free from the ground – in front of county star Mickey Newman- to add to his tally of points. Maguire then scored his second goal after a good run through the centre. Oldcastle were having no joy going forward and the Seneschalstown boys made the game safe with a fifth goal from Mulvany. Having played a one-two with Maguire along the left side-line, Mulvany shot for a point but the ball dropped into the net after hitting the post. The duo then swapped roles as Mulvany collected a through ball from Keating before passing to Maguire who sent an absolute rocket to the roof of the net to complete his hat trick However Oldcastle did show good character and pulled two good goals back. Seneschalstown did finish off the scoring with Maguire pointing. As the game went on, Seneschalstown manager Paul Finnegan emptied the bench giving all the squad members a well-deserved run on what very good team performance .
It capped off a fine year for the ‘town youngsters who had already won the Division 3 Championship Shield and got to a Spring League Division 2 Semi-Final. Afterwards Paul Mooney presented the shield to Cathal Finnegan along with Ben Lyons.
