Seneschalstown’s quest to atone for last year’s defeat in the final of the Junior D Football Championship began in style today in Martry. On what was a fabulous day for a game the form shown by the team in blue certainly matched the weather.
Fielding only six of the team which started in last year’s final Seneschalstown laid down a marker that they intend to make up for that defeat as they posed too many questions for a Kilmainham side who did not have the required answers. From the first whistle to the last Seneschalstown dominated the game and indeed eleven of their players gave the umpires cause to raise a flag.
Midfield stalwart from last year Aled Ingman got the ball rolling in the first minute when he slotted over the first of his six pointed frees, this one coming from the right hand side. He tapped over a point from play on seven minutes before getting two more pointed frees, the second coming after a foul on centre forward Mark Gilsenan. Adam Gargan galloped forward from his right half back berth to split the posts before Gilsenan rolled the ball into the bottom right hand corner with his left boot.
Soon afterwards corner back John Muldoon scored what was probably the score of the game. From a starting position a yard behind his man he sprinted past his man, won the ball, soloed up field and drove the ball over the bar. The Seneschalstown scoring spree continued as Colin Lynch got two from play, Ingman with two frees, Mark Gilsenan and full forward Eddie Meade all tagged on points before flying wing forward Brendan Lynch finished off the first half scoring with a well taken goal.
The second half continued along much the same pattern with a free and a forty five from Ingman, this coming after the Kilmainham goalkeeper had pulled off a fine stop from a goal attempt by Adam Gargan. Mark Gilsenan, half time substitute Sean Noonan, Paul McDonnell, Colin Lynch and Brendan Lynch all pointing before the fortieth minute was up. During this period of the game Meade had to depart the field after suffering a dislocated thumb.
Thomas Duggan became the sixth starting forward to register a score on forty one minutes before Kilmainham scored their first efforts of the game in the forty fourth and forty fifth. They then notched a third after second half replacement Mark Gleeson had added his name to the score sheet.
Over the last six minutes of the game it became the Paul McDonnell and Colin Lynch show in terms of scoring as McDonnell kicked three points from play and Lynch two to bring the Seneschalstown total for the game to 2-26. As opening statements go, this one would be hard bettered and coach Mattie McCabe must have been satisfied. Fourteen wides kicked over the hour leaves room for improvement and this will be required as stiffer tests will lie ahead.
