When Seneschalstown played in Martry last weekend the sun shone but this afternoon the conditions were markedly different as this game was played out under an overcast sky. However the pattern of the game played out in a similar style to last week as Seneschalstown eased to their second victory of the championship so far when emerging victorious by twenty four points.
With the team showing three alterations from last week, Conor McCoy, Brendan Lynch and Eddie Meade being absent on this occasion, the strength in depth of the panel was in evidence as promising minors Darragh Keogh, Ronan Conneely and Sean Noonan who had starred for St. Patrick’s Classical School in their Leinster Championship campaign earlier in the year slotted into the side in their place.
The opening exchanges were something of a Sean Noonan versus the Kells forward line battle as each time they scored a point he replied with a score, the third of these being an excellently finished goal following good work from wing back Adam Gargan.
Colin Lynch extended the Seneschalstown advantage to three when firing over a point from play before Aled Ingman finished to the net following a good run through the centre of the Kells defence. Noonan tapped over another point before Mark Gilsenan claimed the third goal of the opening fifteen minutes after being placed for the chance by Ingman. This goal coming in response to the fourth point of the day for Gaeil Colmcille.
Tommy Duggan registered a point before Noonan brought his tally to a goal and four points when he finished off a good team move before his day was brought to a premature conclusion when he had to leave the field after falling victim to a heavy challenge. Ingman kept the scoreboard ticking over before wing forward Ronan Conneely became the fifth forward to give reason for a flag to be raised when kicking a well taken point to register Seneschalstown’s last score of the half.
As the clock struck thirty minutes the town men were awarded a penalty following a foot block by a defender in blue. However Shane Corbally was intent on keeping his goal intact and flung himself to his left to excellently divert the well struck penalty around the post for a forty five which failed to come to fruition. Shortly afterwards a converted free for Gaeil Colmcille left the half time score reading Seneschalstown 4-07 Gaeil Colmcille 0-05.
The second half was largely one way traffic and was lacking in any great intensity as the victors continued to pick off their scores with relative ease.
An early effort from Paul McDonnell ensured that for the second week running the starting sextet of forwards scored before he quickly followed up with another. Tommy Duggan than picked off his second following good play from Darragh Keogh. Ingman then converted a free after a foul on Mark Gilsenan. Gilsenan got a point of his own after being set up by the experienced Steven Dillon. Gaeil Colmcille then registered two frees in response to a point from play by Ingman which went over via the left hand upright.
Dillon then got on the score sheet before another free from Ingman and McDonnell’s third point of the half.
Having made an impressive start to their championship campaign with two wins from two Seneschalstown will be looking to improve on their third place position in the league when travelling to take on second placed Curraha on Wednesday evening.
