Under 14 Division 1 Shield Semi Final

Seneschalstown 6-13 Walterstown 4-19

On what can only be described as a perfect evening for football local rivals Seneschalstown and Walterstown played out an extremely exciting and riveting draw on Friday evening.

Both sides pointed in the opening minute with Dylan Keating opening the hosts account. However, by the 12th minute Walterstown opened up a four point lead – 0-06 0-02. Sean Carey hit Seneschalstown’s point during this period.

In the 14th minute Seneschalstown won a free at a tight angle. Centre forward Alan Mulvany took and it dropped in over the goalies head and into the net. Walterstown responded with 1-03 of their own in in a three minute spell. Jason Lyons then netted for Seneschalstown but the visitors responded likewise immediately. Keating (1-03) and Carey reduced the deficit but Walterstown ended the half strongly scoring 1-05.

Half Time: Seneschalstown 3-05 Walterstown 3-14.

Sean Commons opened the second half scoring with a point to reduce the gap to 8. Mulvany (free) and Adam O’Meara pointed either side of another Walterstown score. Lyons then netted his second after collecting a high ball.

The visitors then added another brace of points. Mulvany (free) and Lyons answered immediately with a point each. Walterstown then raised another pair of white flags. Carey then kicked a point for Seneschalstown. When Lyons netted for a third time the gap was two.

The drama didn’t end there though as Walterstown netted a fourth goal. It looked like curtains for the hosts at that stage. Keating and Carey reduced the gap to a goal. In injury time Seneschalstown won a fourteen yard free. Centre back Ciaran Mongey took it off the ground and sent an absolute rocket into the top right hand corner. From the kick out ref Paul Mooney blew the full time whistle.

Great credit is due to both sets of players, particularly Seneschalstown as they were reduced to fourteen men half way through the second half while chasing a big deficit, and they showed immense character to level the game at full time. If the replay is half as good we will be in for a real treat – don’t miss it.
