The curtain came down on the Seneschalstown Under 14’s year on Saturday afternoon with a disappointing 5 point defeat to a stronger St Colmcilles side in Duleek. Make no mistake about it, both teams served up an excellent game of football, enjoyed by a large attendance.
It was the Piltown side that opened the days scoring with a point after two minutes. However Seneschalstown made the most of their scoring opportunities early on as they rushed into seven point lead after eleven minutes. Opening their account was Cillian Gormley after Ciaran Mongey’s ball over the top was fumbled by the Colmcilles defence. Mongey then won the resultant kickout and made a burst up the left wing. He offloaded the ball to the onrushing Sean Commons who sent a high dropping shot over the bar. In the sixth minute Seneschalstown made an excellent sweeping up field move which resulted in another Gormley point. Mongey took a quick free to Dylan Keating. Keating then popped the ball into Alan Mulvany who flicked the ball over his marker to Gormley and he made no mistake with the chance.
Their day got even better when midfielder Daire Finnegan found the net. Sean Commons passed to Dylan Keating whose shot at goal was saved. However Finnegan pounced on the rebound and gladly took the opportunity. A minute later Mulvany opened his account with a fine point after good work from Gormley, Commons and wing back Sean Carey. Commons then registered his second point after Mulvany, Keating and Adam O’Mara linked up well. St Colmcilles though, started soaking up the pressure and kept Seneschalstown scoreless for the next eleven minutes. However they were particularly wayward in front of goal and only added two points during this period.
In the twenty second minute the Yellow Furze side opened an eight point gap after Joseph Moore goaled. Daire Finnegan ran through the middle but had his initial effort was blocked but the ball made its way across the goalmouth to Moore who toe poked home. However this goal seemed to have the desired effect on the seasiders as they responded with a goal of their own. A high ball broke down and despite the initial effort hitting the post the ball was finished to the net by their corner forward. They also tagged on a point in the twenty seventh minute leaving Seneschalstown with a four point advantage at half time.
Half Time: Seneschalstown 2-05 St Colmcilles 1-04.
The ‘Cilles continued their revival after the break and they netted a second time forty seconds in. A Dylan Keating free was Seneschalstown’s response but Colmcilles were in the lead immediately after as they scored a third goal. Seneschalstown responded expertly as they pointed three times in as many minutes. Firstly, Keating and Cathal Hickey combined to send Mulvany dashing through the middle and he punted over the bar. Finnegan won the kick out and kicked into Ross Mullen who swivelled around his marker and split the posts with his left boot. The third point of this scoring burst was a 21 metre free from Mulvany.
However, Colmcilles hit a purple patch between the forty second and forty ninth minutes. This left Seneschalstown chasing a five point deficit with ten minutes left as they hit a goal and four points. Keating reduced it to four when pointing a thirty metre free with eight minutes left but this was wiped out two minutes later by the Cilles.
Seneschalstown were thrown a massive lifeline though with five minutes left as Finnegan netted for a second time. Keating sent a ball into the square which Finnegan won. He evaded a few challenges to bury the ball low into the net. The gap was then down to one after O’Mara’s sideline fell to Gormley who pointed and it was definitely game on again. However St Colmcilles hit a goal and a point in the final few minutes as Seneschalstown went forward to find an equaliser.
Seneschalstown never gave up but came up just short in their pursuit. The management and players deserve a lot of credit for putting in an excellent effort throughout the year.
