Under 15 League Division 2 Round 5

Seneschalstown 5-10 Clan na Gael 6-09

After sixty minutes of enthralling football, Seneschalstown came up just short against Clan na Gael after a brilliant second half fightback on Saturday afternoon. Trailing by fourteen points at the break they managed to recover twelve of those before time ran out on the home side.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested with 4-04 evenly shared. Full forward Robbie Wogan opened the days scoring when splitting the posts after an excellent team move. From the throw in Brian Maguire was fouled. His quick free found Alan Mulvany who in turn passed to Wogan. Wogan played a one-two with corner forward Sean Carey before Wogan shot. The visitors equalised from the next attack with their midfielder pointing. Unfortunately, the hosts lost Mulvany to a bad hamstring injury suffered during the previous passage of play.

On seven minutes Clan na Gael raised the first green flag of the day when their centre forward rifled the ball to the roof of the net. From the next play, Wogan opened Seneschalstown’s goal tally for the day when Dylan Keating punched the ball to him and from forty five metres out he ran at the defence before dispatching the ball to the net. Another Clan na Gael goal restored their three point lead, but anything they could Wogan could do likewise. He grabbed his second major of the afternoon after Sean Carey fed him the ball. Cathal Finnegan became the second Seneschalstown to score when pointing from thirty metres out after Jason Kearney found him in space.

Clan na Gael equalised again and this kicked an extremely fruitful fifteen minutes for them as they registered 3-05 between then and the interval and keeping Wogan and the rest of the Seneschalstown attack scoreless. Clan na Gael’s Cian Swaine kicked three points while their right half forward kicked 1-01. Their right corner back and left corner forward also tallied goals during this period. Seneschalstown could have found themselves further behind had it not been for the excellence of keeper Keith Waters who made two excellent one-on-one saves while tipping another over the bar.

Seneschalstown were determined to right the wrongs of the first half and went about their task in a workmanlike manner. Wogan, who had been operating at centre forward since Mulvany’s departure, kicked two early points to reduce the deficit before Swaine responded for the visitors. Wogan pointed again on thirty six minutes, after being picked out by half time substitute Brian Boyd. Three minutes later centre back Richie McKeown ventured forward to kick a rare point after Wogan picked him out with a short forty five.

The Athboy/Rathcairn side scored their sixth goal when their right half forward finished low to the net. Wogan completed his hat-trick when expertly finding the net after an excellent foot pass from Sean Carey. Another Keith Waters save preceded a fourth Wogan goal after Naoise Sweeney laid the ball off to him twenty five metres out. Swaine kicked Clan na Gael’s last score. Dylan Keating then pointed in the fifty third minute after Carey palmed the ball into his path.

Carey then scored a goal of his own when burying the ball in the back of the net after McKeown played him through. Finnegan pointed for a second time when keeping in a Ciaran Mongey pass close to the end line. Wogan scored his last with two minutes remaining before Finnegan’s late goal attempt was tipped over by the visiting goalkeeper leaving two points in it. However Tom Lorton’s watch timed out before Seneschalstown found another goal chance and Clan na Gael left Fr. Tully Park with the points.
