Meath A League Division 1 Round 1

Seneschalstown 1-07 Blackhall Gaels 1-07

The first Sunday of February generally marks the commencement of the Allianz National Football Leagues but this year it also marked the beginning of the A Leagues in Meath following a decision to bring their start date forward by a fortnight. Newly promoted Blackhall Gaels were the visitors to Fr. Tully Park on what was a bright but crisp afternoon for a match which ended in a low scoring draw.

The visitors were the first to register a score when pointing after a minute. This score was cancelled out when James Meade split the posts from a free. The Batterstown/Kilcloon outfit then pointed three times to edge into a three point advantage before a nineteenth minute Bryan Clarke goal saw Seneschalstown pull back level. The visitors then moved back into the lead before Joe Sheridan levelled affairs in the lead into half time at 1-02 to 0-05.

As they had done during the first half Blackhall Gaels forced the pace for much of the second and after thirteen minutes had advanced into a two point lead. Brian Sheridan pulled a point back before Clarke brought his tally to 1-02 when hitting a quick-fire brace of points as the home side moved into the lead for the first time. A nine minute scoreless period followed before the visitors managed to raise a green flag. Substitute Brendan Lynch reduced the deficit to a point with less than five minutes remaining on the clock before wing back James Byrne popped up to rescue a point for David Hosie’s charges.
