Meath B League Division 1 Round 1

Gaeil Colmcille 3-10 Seneschalstown 2-11

Grangegodden was the venue for what turned out to be a cracking game of football on a bitterly cold Sunday morning. But while the weather may have been cold and the fog enough to restrict the visibility somewhat the quality of football served up by both sides helped keep the spectators present happy.

Seneschalstown were quickest out of the traps and had the first white flag of the day raised after just two minutes when Ross Howard who was to finish with two goals and a point to his name fired over the bar. Gaeil Colmcille, now under the management of former Meath Ladies manager Lar Wall hit back with two points from play before the lively Peter Waters levelled matters once more. The tit for tat nature of the scoring continued when James Meade cancelled out another Kells point. Meade’s score coming after superb work from the industrious Niall Groome who got through a mountain of work throughout the match.

Wing forward Robert Darby then added his name to the scoreboard before Meade kicked his second of the day in response to two points from open play by the Kells men. With the game being played with great intensity Ronan Conneely and Waters with his second were the next to point for the Dunbia sponsored Seneschalstown side. Waters effort was a score of real quality. Following an excellent tackle in the centre of the field by Kevin Casey, Aled Ingman was fouled. Spotting Waters making a dash to get out in front of the corner back Ingman sent a quickly taken free in his direction. After gathering possession Waters took on and beat his opponent before clipping the ball over the bar. Quick, efficient football at its best.

The response to this score from Gaeil Colmcille was very impressive though as they pilfered a goal and two points in the space of six minutes before Jonathan Gilsenan closed the scoring for the half with a well taken point to leave the scoreboard showing Gaeil Colmcille a point to the good, 1-06 to 0-08.

This lead was soon out to four when just a minute into the second half the men from the heritage town rattled the back of the Seneschalstown goal. Ingman then pulled a point back before Ross Howard squeezed his shot into the bottom right corner of the goal following a quite magnificent run through the heart of the defence. As had been the nature all through the game the response from the home side was instantaneous and impressive as they rattled off a goal and a point in two minutes.

Meade then struck two points in a row before Howard struck for his second goal of the game and this one an absolute beauty as he sent a piledriver of an effort into the top corner following good interplay in the forwards with Casey and Conneely particularly prominent in the move. Kells response to this equalising major, was impressive as they closed out the scoring with two minors to secure the two points on offer.
