Seneschalstown recorded their second consecutive victory of this year’s MFL with a ten point victory over Killary Emmets in sunny Fr. Tully Park on Saturday. Despite being short numerous players, other players stepped up to the mark with excellent performances. The Castletown\Syddan combination opened the scoring with a pointed free but that was the only time they would lead as Seneschalstown always made sure they stayed ahead throughout the game. Ryan O’Dowd pointed a free shortly afterwards and the hosts soon had themselves ahead in the game. Alan Mulvany won a breaking ball and advanced towards goal before being brought down in the square. O’Dowd made no mistake from the spot to open a three point gap.
Killary reduced the gap to two points but Seneschalstown remained in control, despite being guilty of some wayward shooting in the opening period. County minor Adam Carey kicked a fine point from distance against the wind after a move which involved Shane Mulvany and David Gordon. The visitors kicked two more points before O’Dowd brought the first half scoring to a close with a close range free. Seneschalstown led 1-3 to 0-5 at the break.
Manager Mick Mullen demanded an efficient ten minutes at the start of the second period from his players and that’s exactly what he got. O’Dowd kicked his first from play before Alan Mulvany scored a point his performance richly deserved, pointing from an acute angle after elder brother Shane set him up. Dylan Keating also done very well during the move by drawing a defender which created space for Alan Mulvany to move into. In the next attack, Seneschalstown opened up a six point when Robbie Wogan netted. Alan Mulvany played an excellent diagonal daisy cutter to Wogan who finished low to the net. O’Dowd kicked another fine score from play, as did Carey, who both put in tireless performances from midfield. Killary did reduce the deficit, before Danny O’Reilly announced his return to action with a goal, reacting quickest when the ball hit the post. O’Dowd and Wogan both hit final scores to wrap up victory.
The second half performance was much improved but will have to be stepped up another gear or two for the next day as they travel to play St. Pats in Stamullen at 11am on St. Patricks Day.
