Meath Junior D Football Championship Group A Round 1
Seneschalstown 3-07 Bective 0-10
Returning to the venue where their Championship winning aspirations were ended in 2014 Seneschalstown took to the field with a vastly changed side. Only five players who started that semi-final were on the field at the throw in on Sunday as some returning players along with some of the clubs younger players started.
Scores proved difficult to come by in the opening half for both sides as they managed a cumulative eight efforts on target. Seneschalstown though got off to the perfect start when goaling after just one minute. Senior manager David Hosie, who lined out on the forty, won a kickout and spotting Eddie Meade in a bit of space played the ball in towards the full forward. Meade then made no mistake, finishing to the back of the net to give his side the perfect start.
The response to this goal from the Bective men was impressive as they reeled off four points in a row to hit the front and were unlucky not to grab a goal of their own when hitting Seneschalstown’s crossbar. Meade levelled the affairs when profiting from good work from Robert Mullen and Hosie before Eoin Finnegan pushed his side into the lead when pointing with a right foot shot. David Gordon then pulled off a fine stop when spreading his frame to save before on the stroke of half time Bective brought the sides level once more.
Early in the second half Ryan O’Dowd was introduced to the Seneschalstown forward line and he wasn’t long on before making his presence felt. After Finnegan had hit his second point of the afternoon O’Dowd intercepted the resultant kickout. Showing good awareness he drew the defender before placing Meade who made no mistake to grab his second goal and push his side four clear.
Bective’s response was impressive as they hit two points before Sean Doyle kicked two on the bounce, the first coming after good work from Steven Dillon, Hosie, Mark Gleeson and Meade. O’Dowd stretched the Seneschalstown advantage before being fouled for a free which Finnegan tapped over. Bective though were not lying down and when hitting three points in a row to reduce the deficit to three with the game entering the last couple of minutes they looked like they would set up a grandstand finish. However, the experienced Mark Gleeson had other ideas and when his side needed an insurance score he popped up with a goal to secure a six point victory.
