Meath Junior D Football Championship Group A Round 2
Seneschalstown 2-11 Boardsmill 3-04
Seneschalstown made it back to back wins on Saturday evening when courtesy of a much improved second half performance they powered to victory over Boardsmill in Walterstown. Trailing at the interval they needed to come out all guns blazing in the final thirty minutes and with the aid of goals from Eddie Finnegan and substitute Dylan Doyle they did just that to eventually win by four points.
Ryan O’Dowd, starting after an impressive cameo performance in Round 1, opened the scoring when pointing a free from a narrow angle before midfielder Sean Doyle doubled his teams lead after seven minutes when getting on the end of a move in which David Hosie and O’Dowd were heavily involved. Boardsmill, playing into a stiff breeze, got their first score of the evening a minute later when pointing from play before after getting on the end of a quickly taken Hosie free O’Dowd hit his second of the evening.
Robbie Mullen then saw a goal attempt parried over the bar before Francis Sheridan sent over a well struck effort which was soon followed by another O’Dowd point after Steven Dillon had burst forward from his centre half back berth before offloading to the lethal wing forward. This was to be his sides last score of the half as in spite of being wind assisted they suddenly collapsed, conceding three goals in the run in to half time, two of which came from needlessly conceded penalties.
Whatever words were spoken by the management team of Michael Mullen, Leo Sheridan and Paul Finnegan seemed to have the desired effect as their charges turned in a vastly improved overall performance in the second half. From back to front performance levels rose markedly and they began to play much better football. Eoin Finnegan reduced the deficit on thirty six minutes when sending over a free off the ground from distance, a score which was soon cancelled out by Boardsmill’s second point of the day.
The turning point though came next when Eddie Meade left the net bulging with a blistering shot. After Francis Sheridan had done well to spread the ball out to Daniel McLoughlin he sent a high ball into Finnegan who palmed the ball into Meade’s path and the full forward gobbled up the chance like a starved man would a dinner in a Michelin restaurant. Eoin Finnegan equalised then slicing over off his left from the narrowest of angles after linking up well with Mark Gleeson. Finnegan from a free, Ryan O’Dowd and David Hosie added points before second half substitute Dylan Doyle scored his side’s second goal of the game after benefitting from good work from Hosie and O’Dowd.
Boardsmill reduced the margin between the sides to four with two converted frees but at four points the margin still was when the referee sounded his final whistle. Best for Seneschalstown were Ryan O’Dowd, Ian Carey and Francis Sheridan.
