A League Division 1B Round 6

Seneschalstown 3-17 Moynalvey 0-05

Having had their Round 5 match away to Dunderry postponed at the eleventh hour the last time out, Seneschalstown quickly went about making up for lost time by dishing out a comprehensive 21-point thumping to Moynalvey in Fr. Tully Park on Friday evening.   Having lead from start to finish, the win moves Seneschalstown onto three wins from four outings in the Division 1B League table and truth be told the game looked to be heading in only one direction from well before half time.

It took a little over two minutes for the scoreboard operator to be put to work for the first time, Dylan Keating kicking a tidy point after Donie Commons, Rob Wogan and Alan Mulvany put together a move from a long David Gordon kickout.   On 6 minutes, Seneschalstown got in for goal number one.

Seneschalstown managed to work the ball to Cathal Finnegan out on the left hand side, and Finnegan spotted his namesake Robbie in one on one on the edge of the square.   The former fizzed a beautiful diagonal pass across the field, taking out the last man into the path of Robbie who finished excellently to the bottom left corner.   Finnegan immediately added a point to his tally from play and Seneschalstown were up and running.

The Seneschalstown inside line continued to torment the Moynalvey full back line early on, Dylan Keating and Robbie Finnegan adding their second points respectively before Cathal Finnegan used the breeze to full effect, curling in a high effort from the dugout side of the pitch.

The fast start continued when Rob Wogan took on a number of Moynalvey defenders with a surging run and clipped over another score, one his early endeavours deserved and were to continue for the duration of the 60 minutes.   Seneschalstown lead by 1-06 to 0-00 after 16 minutes.

Seneschalstown’s scoring rate slowed over the next 10 minutes, with Moynalvey getting a couple of points to get themselves on the scoresheet but the home side ended their dry spell with an absolutely stunning goal.   Having won a turnover in the corner back position, the ball was quickly transferred through the hands of a number of players including Brian Maguire, Danny Waters, Alan Mulvany, Dylan Keating and Cathal Finnegan.   There was a queue of Seneschalstown players lining up to finish the move across the square and Donie Commons was the grateful recipient of the final hand pass from Keating to palm to the net.   A move which started and finished in seconds!

Alan Mulvany fired over his first point of the hour in the next attack and the Seneschalstown lead stood at 10 points at half time, 2-07 to 0-03.

Seneschalstown continued where they left off upon the resumption with Dylan Keating, like he had done in the opening stanza, arrowing between the posts for the first score of the half.   Another point followed immediately, Alan Mulvany converting from a tight angle on the wrong side for a right footed kicker.

Seneschalstown’s first point from a free arrived after 38 minutes from the boot of Cathal Finnegan, with the outcome of this game long decided even by this point.

Ross Howard, who ran himself into the ground on the evening got a well-deserved point for himself, which Mulvany tagged onto with a very similar score moments later.   The same player added a free before Seneschalstown notched up their third goal.

Dylan Keating played somewhat of a hopeful ball in towards the direction of Cathal Finnegan which was missed by the Moynalvey defender.   Finnegan bet the keeper in a foot race to the ball, skipped around him and planted the ball into an empty net, leaving the scoreboard showing a healthy 3-14 in the home side’s column.   The last few minutes petered out with Cathal Finnegan (free), and substitutes Eoin Finnegan and Sémí Byrne putting their names on the scoresheet as Seneschalstown ran out comfortable winners in the end.   Byrne’s point was an impressive effort from distance which rounded out the scoring for the evening.

A special word for Luke Healy, one of the 2022 Minor crop who came on to make his Senior debut in the second half, replacing the injured David Gordon in goals.

Seneschalstown will be happy with their evening’s work as they start to prepare for busy period of matches to come, starting with the back match against St. Michael’s on Tuesday week.
