Meath Ladies Division 5 League

Seneschalstown 6-15 St Colmcilles 1-4

Seneschalstown secured a ladies Div. 5 league final place after this good win over a gallant St Colmcilles outfit in Fr Tully Park.

With the sun peeking thru the clouds and gloomy drizzly evening leaving a team of youth and experience took to the pitch to do battle.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a point but the home team equalised in the 5th minute through Anna Wogan. Aoife Mulvany put the home team in front shortly afterwards and further points from Wogan, Mulvany and Chrystal Delamere had the home team 4 points ahead by the end of the first quarter. The first goal arrived when a long range shot from Wogan dropped under the crossbar. Kelly Smith then got on the score sheet before debutant Sadhbh McLarney scored the second goal of the game. Shirley Quinn then popped over a fine point from play and the home team were putting some fine moves together.

St Colmcilles scored their goal 5 minutes before the break but 1-1 from Wogan on the run into the break had the home team leading 3-8 to 1-1 when the short whistle sounded. While the forwards were converting the scores, the defence and midfield were working hard to supply the ball to the forwards.

The second half started with the home team on top and Aoife Sheehy increased the advantage with a point. The Cilles girls responded and got their first point of the half soon afterwards. Ava Jane Ryan then blasted over her first point which was soon followed by Quinn finding the back of the visitor’s net. Ryan then added another point from play but the Cilles scored two points which were well greeted by the good following that had come to support them and had a spell of pressure which was repelled well by the home defence.

In the last quarter, Wogan tagged on 1-1 in quick succession while a goal from Smith sandwiched in between 2 Sheehy points completed the home team’s tally.

Goalie Sinead McLarney dealt with anything that came her way and her kickouts were very effective, the full back line of Catherine Smyth, Cathy Ann Cowley and Orla McMahon were solid all night with Cowley constantly encouraging those around her. The tackling of the half back line of Zoe Kirwan, Orla Finnegan and Leah Ryan was the source of a lot of the attacks while Laura Burke and Chrystal worked their socks off in the middle of the park. The half forward line of Shirley Quinn, Kelly Smith and Anna Wogan worked well together and contributed handsomely to the scoreboard and the same can be said for the inside line of Aoife Mulvany, Ava Jane Ryan and Sadhbh McLarney. Substitute Aoife Sheehy also contributed handsomely to the score sheet in the second half.

There is one round still to be played against Royal Gaels who will also provide the opposition for the final. With Championship taking centre stage over the next two months and the holiday period thrown in for good measure, the final is not due to be played until September.
