U-17 League Division 4 Round 7
Seneschalstown 3-12 Brú na Boinne 4-09
Having built up a healthy advantage over the preceding fifty five minutes of the match Seneschalstown were left to rue a crazy last five minutes when Brú na Boinne hit them for two goals and a point to secure a share of the spoils on Friday evening in a sun drenched Fr. Tully Park.
The home side opened the scoring for the hour when after being awarded a penalty for a foot block corner forward David Gordon opted to take the safe option when sending his effort over the bar. Wing forward Shane Mulvany then opened his account for the evening a couple of minutes later when pointing before almost immediately Ryan O’Dowd left the net bulging after firing past the goalkeeper.
Brú na Boinne then settled themselves with two points in as many minutes before Robert Wogan brought the opening quarter to a close when netting a goal. The scoring rate then slowed down somewhat before Eoin Finnegan hit a trademark left footed point after capitalising on good work from the hard working midfielder Danny Reilly. The visitors though managed to haul themselves back into contention before the interval when grabbing a twenty sixth minute goal after the home sides defence allowed an attacker sneak in behind them and then hit the final point of the half to leave only a goal between the sides.
This half time deficit was narrowed to two points upon the restart when they hit another point before Eoin Finnegan took the game by the scruff of the neck with a four point run interrupted only by a solitary effort in response from the away outfit. Finnegan kicked his first after being placed for the score by Mulvany before kicking two frees. Brú na Boinne pulled one back before Finnegan brought his five minute burst to a close with another effort from play.
Brú na Boinne kicked another point before Ryan O’Dowd then kicked his first point of the evening which was followed up seconds later by a second goal of the match from Robert Wogan as Seneschalstown stretched their advantage to eight points. The visitors managed to hit a goal and two points to leave only three points between the sides with ten minutes remaining.
Shane Mulvany though stretched the Seneschalstown advantage back out to five when hitting a brace of points, the first arriving after a burst upfield by Adam Carey and the second set up by Ryan O’Dowd. Goalkeeper Ruairí McDonagh then pulled off a fantastic double save when the concession of a goal seemed inevitable. Eoin Finnegan kicked his sixth of the match before O’Dowd kicked the home side into a seemingly unassailable seven point advantage with only five minutes remaining on the referee’s stopwatch.
However, the thirteen players from the Slane/St. Mary’s amalgamation were far from finished and finished with a burst the likes of which are hard to quell. In the fifty sixth minute they kicked what appeared to be a consolation score before life was breathed into the match when McDonagh was beaten only seconds later. Their gander was up by this point and while the Seneschalstown defence tried desperately to keep them out the visitors found the goal which tied matters up with time almost elapsed.
Seneschalstown though had one last chance to repeat their feat from last week and snatch victory in stoppage time but after being awarded a free about thirty metres out to the left of the posts their effort drifted wide on the right hand side and with that their chance of claiming the points.
