Seneschalstown open their Under 20 ‘A’ Football Championship with a comfortable victory over Walterstown on Friday evening. Played in wet conditions Seneschalstown led from start to finish, in what turned out to be relatively easy victory for the visitors.

Seneschalstown open their Under 20 ‘A’ Football Championship with a comfortable victory over Walterstown on Friday evening. Played in wet conditions Seneschalstown led from start to finish, in what turned out to be relatively easy victory for the visitors.
Ross Mullen opened the scoring for the away side with a pointed free before Walterstown levelled for what would prove to be the only time in the game with a point shortly afterwards. Seneschalstown, however would take control thereafter and lead right until the end. Another Mullen free put Seneschalstown back in front, before full forward Joey Moore got his first point of the night after eight minutes. Mullen’s fine early form continued as he rounded out the opening quarter with two more points, one each from play and a free.
Upon resumption, Declan Byrne’s team were boosted further when they had the ball in the Walterstown net. Ross Mullen was credited with the final touch after a goalmouth scramble to increase the visitors lead to seven points after 20 minutes. To their credit, the home side responded in the best possible fashion with a goal of their own less than two minutes later. Seneschalstown were hoping to bounce back in a positive manner before half time and managed to keep their hosts scoreless during this period. They strengthened their platform with two further points before the interval, both courtesy of midfielder Seán Commons.
Seneschalstown led by 6 points at half-time, 1-07 to 1-01 as conditions only continued to worsen.
The away side continued to push on at the beginning of the second half. Wing forward Jamie Kirwan put over the first score of the half, which was quickly followed up by Joey Moore’s second point of the hour. First half substitute Will Finnegan added his name to the list of Seneschalstown scorers with another white flag for his side on 35 minutes and at this stage, they looked well set for victory.
Some of the younger squad members saw game time as the second half wore on, but Seneschalstown continued on in a professional manner. Donal Commons pointed a free after 41 minutes to open his account for the evening, before brother Seán assumed the duties to kick Seneschalstown’s 13th point of the game. Team captain Cathal Hickey got himself forward for a point with 6 minutes of normal time remaining, with Will Finnegan doing likewise almost immediately.
Walterstown did manage to plunder a second goal for themselves late in the piece but by that stage it was nothing more than a consolation as Donal Commons closed the scoring with one final point as Seneschalstown ran out 11 point victors on their short trip up the road.
They now advance to the semi-finals where the opponents, date and time are all yet to be confirmed.
