Seneschalstown suffered a disappointing defeat to neighbours Duleek Bellewstown in Round 2 of Division 1 of the league today after turning in a flat display over the hour.

Following last week’s victory away to Oldcastle hopes were high as the teams emerged on to the pitch that Seneschalstown would make it four points out of four. However as events unfolded it soon became apparent that this would be unlikely.

Duleek made a lightning quick start and after seven minutes were 1-02 to 0-00 ahead, with 1-01 of this coming from play as they adopted an excellent running gameplan.

Seneschalstown then registered their first point of the game when James Meade slotted over a free following a foul on wing forward Joe Cowley as he kicked the ball in towards the full forward line. The men in green and gold immediately hit back with their corner forward getting his second goal of the game.

Meade then tagged on a second free after a push on the back of Robert Ruddy after he had fielded a 45 from Joe Sheridan. Sheridan tagged on a point of his own a few minutes later after referee Patrick Coyle played an excellent advantage following a foul.

The two sides exchanged a point apiece with Meade notching his third free before a scoreless nine minute period leading into half time.

Following the interval Meade narrowed the margin to five points with another free, this time following a foul on corner forward Jonathan Gilsenan and the Seneschalstown support began to hope that a comeback was on the cards

Unfortunately this was as close as the two sides got for the remainder as Duleek Bellewstown struck four points on the bounce to leave the scoreboard reading 2-08 to 0-05 in favour of the visitors after forty minutes.

Gary Conlon who had reverted to wing forward in a switch with Cowley then marked his first appearance of the year with a point , while Eamon Sheridan marked his introduction with another. Adam Carey, having been introduced as a substitute struck a nice point with his left foot before Joe Sheridan got his second from play, shooting over from a narrow angle after being set up by Tean Cummins.

Overall this was a disappointing performance from the men from Yellow Furze who will be hoping to get some of their injured players back over the next few weeks as they look to bounce back in Round 3 when they travel to take on St. Peter’s Dunboyne.
