On a glorious sunny Easter Monday evening the Ladies of Seneschalstown and Sultans took to the field in Fr. Tully Park looking to claim the two points on offer. St. Ultan’s arrived with the majority of their team from the 2014 Championship Final starting while Seneschalstown’s side had a more experimental look to it as new manager Phonsie Gilsenan uses the early stages of the League to give the younger members of his panel some experience.
Scores were hard to come by in the opening exchanges and it was the Seneschalstown Ladies who registered first when lively corner forward Siabhra Reilly pointed. St. Ultan’s then began to get into their groove and popped over four points on the spin before a pointed free from Fiona Mahon and another effort from Reilly cut the deficit to the minimum. St. Ultan’s added another two points but Amy Gilsenan, continuing her return from a cruciate ligament injury, finished off the first half scoring with two points to leave just the minimum between the teams at the break.
The second half opened with two more St. Ultan’s points before Mahon pointed her second free but alas this was to be her side’s final score of the match. The Bohermeen outfit added a further four points to ultimately run out deserving double score winners.
Seneschalstown will be disappointed to lose out to their close rivals but with young players such as Aisling Taaffe, Gráinne Gordon, Ruth Commons, Nina Stimpson, Reilly and Kelly Smith as well as subs Kiah Geraghty, Laura Wall, Shona Loughran and Catherine Smyth all gaining further experience at the highest level as well as Gilsenan continuing her comeback there were still plenty of positives to glean from the match.
