‘A’ League Division 1B Round 7
Seneschalstown 1-12 Walterstown 1-09
Seneschalstown continued their winning ways in the League on Tuesday night when seeing off Walterstown in this local derby played in Fr. Tully Park. Having beaten St.Michael’s and Curraha over the previous 10 days, Seneschalstown were hoping to complete this mini-block of games with three wins from three. Despite a slow start, a goal from Eoin Finnegan in the 13th minute put them ahead for the first time, after which they were never headed.
A bright start from Walterstown left the hosts in a the hosts in a bit of a predicament early on racing into three point lead after five minutes before Seneschalstown opened their account. Cathal Finnegan accounting for the opening two points, the first a mark and the second from a free before Seneschalstown got in for the key aforementioned goal. Sean Carey did well to spot Eoin Finnegan peeling off the back of a defender who caught the ball and rounded the keeper.
Donie Commons increased the lead with a high hanging effort and Seneschalstown began to look more comfortable. Cathal Finnegan tagged on another free before Alan Mulvany steered one between the posts after Eoin Finnegan set him up.
One last Walterstown point left four points between the teams, 1-05 to 0-04.
The visitors came out at the start of the second half in similar vein to the first, pointing within seconds of the restart which left only Eoin Finnegan’s goal between the sides. Seneschalstown’s first score of the second half came from a Cathal Finnegan free after Ross Howard was fouled off the ball. Finnegan did likewise moments later after he was fouled himself but Seneschalstown were rocked on their heels when Walterstown got in around the back for a goal after some slack marking in the Seneschalstown defence.
With only two points between the sides now, Seneschalstown responded in positive fashion. Cathal Finnegan converted a ’45 after Eoin Finnegan was foiled in front of goal, and Seán Carey added his name to the scorers list after some good work from Niall McCabe and the two Finnegan following a turnover.
Séimí Byrne gave Seneschalstown some breathing space once more when he sensibly fisted a point, despite there being possible a goal chance on. Walterstown hit back with two points in a row, to which Seneschalstown answered with a fine individual point from Eoin Finnegan, turning his man inside out before landing his shot on top of the net. Seneschalstown had an opportunity to see out the game comfortably but Cathal Finnegan dragged a penalty right and wide, part of a ten minute spell without a score. Cathal Finnegan did hit the insurance score with another free late on and despite a final Walterstown score, Seneschalstown won out by a three point margin which moves them back to the top of the table for the time being at least after other results on Tuesday night.
Next up for Seneschalstown is a trip to Paddy O’Brien Park on May 23rd to face Navan O’Mahony’s in what will be a key game in deciding the final placings come the end of the League.
