Meath U-14 Spring League Division 2 Round 4

Seneschalstown 7-14 Navan O’Mahonys 1-10

After recording a score of 6-14 in their previous game Seneschalstown went slightly better on Thursday evening when recording a very impressive tally of 7-14 when accounting for the challenge of Navan O’Mahonys in their Brews Hill ground. The foundations for this success were laid in the half back line where particularly in the opening half they repelled O’Mahonys time and time again before setting a counter attack in motion. Indeed by the end of the first half the Seneschalstown youngsters had built up a 5-10 to 0-04 advantage.

It took only fifty seconds for Seneschalstown to record their opening score of the game when Sean Commons got on the end of a move which had started with a Pádraig Finnegan goal line intervention. Jamie Kirwan and Will Finnegan soon picked of a couple of goals, Kirwan’s coming when he drove the ball into the roof of the net and Finnegan’s when his attempt for a point dropped under the crossbar. Another Commons point from play after good work from Pádraig Finnegan and Cathal Hickey arrived in the eight minute before the Navan youngsters got their opening point of the game when pointing from play.

Commons hit back straight away with his third point when splitting the posts after getting on the end of a Joseph Moore pass, the move beginning with a fine piece of defensive play from Tiernan Keogh. Kirwan then picked off two points, the first of which came when he reacted quickest to a loose ball after the O’Mahonys goalkeeper did well to keep out a looping Ross Mullen goal attempt. Commons then tagged on a pointed free before O’Mahonys notched a point from play of their own.

Will Finnegan who was putting in a very good first half performance then added a further point for Seneschalstown after Josh Ryan had done well to intercept a stray pass before Commons added his second free of the game. The home side eked out their third point from play before Finnegan brought his tally to a goal and two points when Ross Mullen found him in acres of space after battling hard to retrieve possession after losing it in the tackle. Joseph Moore soon added his side’s third goal after piercing the home defence with a driving run, a score which was followed up with another converted free from the accurate Commons. Navan O’Mahonys added their fourth point of the half before Seneschalstown struck for a brace of goals on the verge of half time. Firstly, dynamic midfielder Cathal Hickey buried a chance and then less than a minute later Aaron Traynor showed a predatory instinct to find the back of the net.

With a commanding advantage at the interval the message to the Seneschalstown team at half time would have been to keep up the good work in the second period but it was Navan O’Mahonys who got off to the flying start this time as they struck for a goal and three points before Seneschalstown could catch their breath. Joseph Moore settled his side in the forty first minute when getting on the end of good play from Simon Rooney who was enjoying a dominant display at centre back and Alan Carey. Moore added another four minutes later and then Traynor popped up in the right place to pilfer a second goal. As his side got back on top Commons popped another point over the bar, a score which was followed up two minutes later by another Hickey goal.

Liam Maguire then added his first point of the game, a score which proved to be Seneschalstown’s last of the game. Woodley Nicholson, who had a most effective outing at corner back had a brilliant cameo in the fifty first minute to prevent what had appeared to be an almost certain goal, an intervention which proved the benefit of never giving up. O’Mahonys finished the game on the front foot with the last three points, all of which came from play, meaning all 1-10 of their total came from open play.

This was a performance, particularly in the first half which showed what this Seneschalstown side is capable of, as they married hard work with some fabulous football. At times their foot passing was a delight to watch as they quickly worked the ball up the field. However, they will be aware that there are aspects of their game which need some work but any day only eleven scores are conceded and twenty one scored is a good day’s work.
