Seneschalstown got their Kepak LGFA Senior Championship off to a winning start with an accomplished performance on their trip to South Meath to play Boardsmill on Sunday evening. The Meath players returned to line out for their clubs in competitive action two weeks after their All-Ireland win and this was a boost to both teams.
The opening exchanges were tight and the first four points were evenly shared. Stacey Grimes put over two frees for the away side, while Emma Troy was responsible for one of Boardsmill’s early efforts. From here on Seneschalstown began to put their stamp on proceedings and were able to draw fouls out of the Boardsmill defence. Grimes knocked over two further frees to open a double scores advantage, before Orla Finnegan became the second Seneschalstown player to score with their first effort from play. The point came after a move involving Meadhbh Hickey, Grimes and Louise Coyle. Boardsmill answered with a brace of points of their own. Corner forward Anna Wogan added her name to the scoresheet, then Seneschalstown got in for the crucial score of the half. After Stacey Grimes played an excellent ball over the top to Charlie Murray, she offloaded to Louise Coyle who had her initial effort saved by the Boardsmill goalkeeper, but she got down low to fist the ball over the line, despite the best efforts of a recovering defender. This gave the visitors a five point cushion, which Anna Wogan increased four minutes later with a fine point from 25 metres after Meadhbh Hickey won an excellent turnover on halfway.
The next score was probably score of the game as Seneschalstown moved the ball the whole way up the pitch, starting with goalkeeper Robyn Murray who picked out twin sister Charlie. Anna Wogan then got involved in the move before Stacey Grimes found herself in a a position to simply pop over the point. The teams swapped frees to close out the half, leaving Seneschalstown 1-09 to 0-05 to the good at the break.
The scoring rate dropped in the third quarter with only four points scored, three of them for Seneschalstown. Anna Wogan pointed within 30 seconds of the throw in, which was here third quickly followed up by a Charlie Murray point. Boardsmill added a free to their tally to get themselves up and running for the half but neither side were able to add any scores until the other side of the water break. To their credit, Boardsmill kept plugging away and put over the next two scores to move with six points, but Seneschalstown regained control as the clock ticked towards 60 minutes.
Stacey Grimes kicked yet another free for her team, before full forward Louise Coyle, whose direct running caused Boardsmill problems all evening, was fouled inside the large square. Grimes resultant effort from the spot went over the top of the crossbar. Wing forward Charlie Murray capped a fine individual display for herself with her third point of the game. Indeed it could have been a goal had the shot been slightly lower but she had to be content with a point. Boardsmill concluded the scoring for the hour, leaving Seneschalstown winner by nine points ahead of their second round clash with Simonstown Gaels at home next Sunday.
