Seneschalstown continued their fine start to the Seamus Connolly Catering sponsored Meath Junior B Football Championship when defeating Moynalvey by twenty points on a cool, breezy evening in Skryne. Having won their Round 1 clash against St. Vincent’s by three points confidence was high going into this clash and this was evident following a performance of quick flowing football characterised by a high workrate and very accurate passing throughout although it must be noted that Moynalvey never got going this evening.
With only twenty nine seconds of the game elapsed this evening Seneschalstown’s impressive corner forward James Conlon served notice of what was to come over the next hour of football when he rifled over the first of his five points from play after being set up by pacey wing forward Neil Darby. By the twelfth minute Conlon was to have three points on the board as he led the early charge from a forward line who led the Moynalvey defenders a merry dance throughout.
Centre forward Stephen Finnegan picked off his first score of the day on three minutes when curling over a free out of his hands from out on the left before Adam Gleeson tore through like a steam train and unleashed a piledriver of a finish to the top corner to give Seneschalstown a five point lead after six minutes.
What was to follow over the next fourteen minutes was a succession of pointed efforts from the Yellow Furze men , with Shane Clarke accounting for four, Conlon with two, Neil Darby, Adam Gleeson and centre back Paul Carey (returning to the side having missed out on the First Round victory through injury) all getting one apiece.
The closing ten minutes of the half continued in much the same pattern with Conlon registering two more efforts from play, Gleeson pointing another and full forward Jonathan Gilsenan opening his account following a surging run from midfielder David Matthews. On the stroke of half time Moynalvey did manage to open their account when pointing a free but the first half was all about the performance of the wind assisted Seneschalstown team who had registered an impressive 1-16 while also kicking six wides.
When the teams emerged from the dressing rooms for the start of the second half the scoring rate for Seneschalstown did slow down but after ten minutes they had stretched their advantage by three following efforts from play by Neil Darby and Shane Clarke as well as a second pointed free of the game for Stephen Finnegan. The pick of these scores was the effort by Darby which followed an excellent passage of build-up play by the forwards.
Moynalvey scored two pointed efforts from play on the trot either side of a pointed free by Clarke and a fine individual effort by hard working midfielder Kevin Casey as manager David Hosie began to ring the changes.
Finnegan notched another effort on forty nine minutes, having been set up by Adam Gleeson which was an immediate riposte to a Moynalvey point from a placed ball.
Moynalvey then scored three points from play in two minutes before Seneschalstown closed out proceedings with Finnegan bringing his total to five and second half substitutes Robert Darby and Gerard McKendry grabbing one apiece while Moynalvey closed their account for the day with a further free.
On an evening where everything that could go right from a Seneschalstown perspective did and the opposite being the case for Moynalvey the most pleasing aspect of the game for the victors would be the endeavour shown by each and every one of the players to beat their opposite number to the ball and the teamwork shown when working the ball to the player in the best scoring position which led to an economical performance in front of the posts.
